NORA ROBERTS LAND - GUEST BLOG

How a childhood crush on Tom Brokaw turned into a steamy Nora Roberts-type Hero

When it comes to romance novels, I always prefer the Alpha kinda guy. The one you know can and will lift a car when a child is trapped under it. The one who will chase after a thief who’s just snatched someone’s purse. But it’s not enough to be manly. He has to have heart. Be a good man. Do the right thing—even when it’s hard.
That pretty much sums up Tanner McBride, my steamy hero in NORA ROBERTS LAND. Back from serving as a war correspondent in Afghanistan, Tanner has seen things that have made him question if there’s anywhere good and safe anymore in the world. He’s returned to a job state-side, hoping to find it.
Then his life takes a wild turn. His new boss blackmails him with a family secret and sends him off to the small town of Dare Valley, Colorado where he’s supposed to make his boss’ wife fall in love with him. Why? Well, Meredith Hale is pursuing her own real-life story of trying to find her own NORA ROBERTS LAND—or happily ever after—by dating all the guys in her small town that resemble Nora-type heroes. This sounds like an interesting, but maybe out-of-left-field story, right? Why’s she doing it? Because Tanner’s boss, who she calls Rick-the-Dick, blamed their divorce on her reading too many Nora Roberts novels and getting ideas, and she’s determined to prove her ex wrong. Rick-the-Dick wants to stop her story since he’s just announced a possible Senate bid. He’s afraid she’s going to hurt his chances for a successful run.
So where does Tom Brokaw fit into all this? Well, I lived in the same small town as Tom Brokaw in South Dakota—although not at the same time. Because he’d become the NBC Nightly News anchor, he was a hero. The town was really proud of him, and growing up I heard stories about him from locals. My mother, a nurse, even took care of his mother at the hospital. Suffice it to say, we were a pro-Brokaw household growing up.
Seeing someone succeed like that, travel around the world, and then interview important people wouldn’t normally inspire a childhood crush. But Tom was super handsome. He seemed like the boy-next-door who’d made it big, but had never let it go to his head. The story and the people seemed important to him. There was a humanity in the way he described the news. And I was captivated. Even though I was young and he was years (and I mean years) older than I was, I wanted to marry him when I grew up. Of course, eventually I realized he was already married—duh—and like I said a whole heck of a lot older than me. So, I settled for wanting to marry a man like Tom Brokaw. Smart, adventurous, compassionate, and hot.
       In other words, Tanner McBride.

"NORA ROBERTS LAND Follows Journalist Meredith Hale as She Returns Home to
Dare Valley, Colorado in Search of Her Own Happily Ever After"

Ava Miles' first novel, NORA ROBERTS LAND, goes on sale July 2nd as an ebook original.  The first book in the Dare Valley Series, it's the story of Meredith Hale and her search for her own "happily ever after", a.k.a. Nora Roberts Land.
Like her heroine, Ava Miles has always known what she appreciates the most about romance novels.  It's the affirmation of romantic love and the guarantee of a "happily ever after." Which made it all the more incomprehensible when her sister's ex-husband concluded that it was reading Nora Roberts novels that was to blame for their divorce.  Later, Ava realized she had the hook for a new story and NORA ROBERTS LAND was born.
In the book, Meredith, a journalist, has just bought Nora Roberts' latest release.  It's the first she's picked up since her divorce.  Her New York power broker ex- husband blamed the break-up on Meredith's Nora Roberts addiction, saying it gave her unrealistic expectations of marriage.  For awhile, their messy divorce put a damper on her dreams of happily ever after, but no more.   Meredith has been asked to return home to Dare Valley, Colorado to fill in for her father at the family newspaper, and she's going with more than one agenda.  She also plans to find her own small-town Nora hero, prove that true love exists, and publish an article about her quest.
That is until her ex gets wind of it.  He's just hired war correspondent Tanner McBride for the international desk at his New York daily and needs him to take on a special assignment first.  He's to go to Dare Valley, make Meredith fall for him and put an end to the article about love à la Nora by breaking her heart. The media mogul is sure the piece will air dirty laundry that will threaten his senate run and he wants Meredith stopped.  Tanner refuses, until blackmail changes his mind.
When the two meet, the attraction between them is undeniable.  As they work together to uncover the mystery behind the death of a family friend, Meredith, who vowed never to date another newspaper man, nonetheless begins to wonder if Tanner could be her own Nora Roberts hero. Meanwhile, Tanner, who knows he's fallen head over heels in love, is determined to thwart his blackmailer and keep Meredith in his life.
Ava Miles mixes humor and suspense in her small town tale as she brings readers a story from the heart and the promise of a happy ending.

Far from the first in her family to embrace writing, Ava Miles comes from a long line of journalists.  Ever since her great-great-grandfather won ownership of a newspaper in a poker game in 1892, her family has had something to do with telling stories, whether to share news or, in her case, fiction.  Her clan is still reporting on local events more than one hundred years later at their family newspaper, much like the Hale family in her book. Ava, who's been scribbling down ideas and writing since childhood, says it wasn't until her characters "wouldn't stop talking" that she completed the first of several novels she had written.

Born and raised in the Midwest, where her family's newspaper is located, Ava went on to earn an undergraduate degree in writing and advance degrees in political science and conflict management.  She is a member of the Romance Writers of America and Washington Romance Writers. She is also part of an unofficial group that regularly convenes a writing retreat at Nora Roberts' restored Inn Boonsboro in western Maryland.  Now writing full-time in the peace and quiet of her northern Virginia porch-swinging-friendly community, she is putting the finishing touches on the two upcoming books in her Dare Valley Series and plotting her next series.

WHEN IS A HERO BOOK BOYFRIEND MATERIAL? ~ GUEST BLOG

Breath-of-Heaven (1)When is a Hero Book Boyfriend material?
by Cindy Holby

Rhys DeRemy. I have to admit of all the heroes I've written he is one of my favorites. Why? Because beneath his bad boy exterior is a man who just wants to be loved. Rhys has never known love. His parents died when he was young and he was raised by a grandmother who was forced into marriage when all she wanted to do was be a nun. He doesn't know about matters of the heart, yet he knows something is missing in his life.

I know every girl has had fantasies about taming the bad boy. Because the only way the bad boy can be tamed is with love. And even though Rhys’s marriage to Eliane is forced on him, there is something about her that touches his heart in a way that he never dared hope for. He falls for her and hard, but because he has never experienced love he doesn't know how to act.

But what makes Eliane fall for Rhys? She’s been sheltered her entire life. She’s never been around a man like Rhys. And even though he doesn't know love, he does know honor. Her father saved his life and when he asks him to marry his daughter to protect her he does, without hesitation. She also sees his relationship with Mathias, his squire, she sees how much he cares for the boy, even though he threatens to beat him every day.

It’s easy to fall in love with every hero I write. Just like it’s easy to put myself in every heroine’s position. And since I can control the story, I give them the qualities and the reactions I would want if it were me. The same thing happens when we read stories. We become the people and experience their journey. Why wouldn't we fall in love with the hero under these circumstances?

"A knight who has known honor but never love and a mysterious huntress with a closely guarded secret share an arranged marriage with a surprisingly sensual consummation—and a fantastic adventure beyond imagination.

THE HUNTRESS
She appeared from nowhere in form-fitting leather, enchanting as the mysterious woods around her. Those dazzling emerald eyes were a challenge, daring the intruder to enter her magic realm.

THE ARRANGEMENT
Tormented boy becomes a battle-hardened warrior, Rhys DeRemy owed unswerving obedience to his king—and now he owed another man his life. If he took the heiress of Aubregate to wife, he could ease the debts of past and present. And Eliane drew him as a candle draws a moth. Her fiery nature ensorcelled him, her silken bed promised…A BREATH OF HEAVEN."

"It’s not every man who’ll risk his life jumping into the flames of a woodland inferno. Then again, Evan Donovan isn’t like other men. No matter how great or how treacherous the challenge, he gets the job done. But when he agrees to look in on a friend’s ex-wife after a suspicious brushfire, Evan learns that some jobs are too hot to handle…

Faye Duncan is a photographer on a mission, shooting fires for a magazine. Her first encounter with a wildfire isn’t nearly as wild as her first night with Evan Donovan. Things really heat up when Evan learns she may have taken a photo of the arsonist setting the fires. Evan is determined to keep Faye safe—but first, he’ll have to open up his heart…"  ~ From Goodreads

Faye's run from L.A. brings her to Strong, a small town inhabited by the Donovan Brothers firefighting business ( and the very sexy smoke jumper brothers ), she's to click few pics, send them to her editor and be on her way. But when her ex-husband calls in a favor to one of the Donovan brothers, things quickly get out of control and when she wakes up in Evan's bed there is no denying the attraction, and he might be just the thing to get her mind of the divorce. And Evan doesn't seem that opposed to it either until he realizes she's snapped a pic of the arsonist lighting bush fires lately and he's plotting to keep her in town before this fiasco blows in his face.

Oh how I enjoy the strong, quiet and very well built alpha male who says little but thinks of all the right things! Evan made a delicious hero, unaware of his charm and trying to get Faye to stay in Strong by showing her a good time, oh not like that girl, though we'll get to that. ;) He was afraid to hope anything could come out of his attraction with Faye as her ex was a fire fighter and that went up in flames. I loved Evan, he made the book great reading!

Faye had had it with L.A. and her work obsessed ex, with the divorce finalized she took off wanting adventure, it just happened to come in a shape of a big, built smoke jumper, gruff with three words or less sentences. I liked Faye's inner drive for new experiences and adventure, her plan of sleeping in her red sexy Vette and using Evan to scratch an itch, which didn't work out quite like planned. Smart girl, but didn't count on falling for anyone so soon after her failed marriage.

I had never read Marsh's novels before so this was such a pleasant surprise! Marsh has a good recipe of action, attraction and suspense, you get the love story, little extra with great supporting characters and a little peak into the mind of the perp. This was a great read, can't wait for Rio's story!

Also check out the Burning Up (Smoke Jumpers #1) cover, makes me want to go back and read Jack's story! And drooling to see Rio's cover. ;)
