MOVIE REVIEW - BREAKING DAWN 2 (SPOILER FREE & SPOILEROUS) WITH GIVEAWAY

Author: Stephanie Meyer
Lenght: 1 hour 55 minutes
Premiere: November 16th, 2012
Seen: November 18th, 2012
Form: Feature-length Movie (ticket paid by me)
Genre: Paranormal/Adventure/Romance
Series: The Twilight Saga  #5
Trailer: See IMDb

First the Spoiler Free section and under it the Spoilers, clearly indicated between the red arrows, and under them the rating. By spoilers I mean... deviation from the original novel by Ms. Meyer for the movie adaptation.

Oh so high expectations for this! Where Breaking Dawn Part 1 totally tanked for me I was expecting a whole lot from Part 2 mainly because all of my favorite parts of the book were in the last half. Renesmee and her growth, Edward and Bella getting it on ;) , Jacob's pack and his attachment to Nessie, meeting the vampires and seeing their gifts in action, the Volturi-Cullen smack down preparations! All the good stuff and my favorite, seeing Bella as a vampire.

So did Breaking Dawn Part 2 deliver? Abso-freaking-lutely!

I was thoroughly entertained from the very beginning to the very end! Everything that could have been bad about Part 1 was - and everything that could have been made awesome for Part 2 was. Starting with Bella waking up as a vampire her reaction to her senses and new sight was interesting, and her restraint for human blood was shorter term, but still nice and visible. I also enjoyed the romance between Edward and Bella, especially their romp at their little cottage in the woods. ;) Now, even though Renesmee as a baby and growing child had obvious CG ( computer generated ) all over her face she wasn't "fake" but looked sort of eerie which added to her appeal to me. I loved the connection to Bella she had, it was very believable.

I was actually ecstatic that the Edward/Jacob hostility came to an end, seeing them on the screen as friends was great. Everyone was getting along in this one and I loved it! Especially all the parts with Charlie, which were all great fun! Lots of happier times and then of course everything goes horribly wrong when the Volturi catch a sniff of Renesmee, thinking she's an immortal child ( a child bitten, made into a vampire, which is a giant no-no ).

I loved the Volturi, especially Aro in this last part, he was positively delightfully mad. Gathering up all the baddies to bring down the Cullen Clan and snatch Alice and her sight of the future to his posse. Of course this means the Cullens need witnesses to prove that Nessie is in fact half human - and then we get the awesome group of gifted vampires. Now this was my second favorite part of the movie all the gifted vampires, and especially the connection between Kate ( electric shock like you don't wanna know ) and Garrett ( no gift, but a great fighter who will try anything once, even Kate's zap ;) ) they are my non-Cullen fave pairing - I think I like them even better than Carlisle and Esme. Of course I loved Vlad 1 and 2, and the amazon women. Watching the show of gifts was exciting as I really looked forward to it!

Begin Spoilers

Okay dear production crew of Breaking Dawn part 2, you had me completely fooled! I was sitting there and my mouth was hanging open when Carlisle died, I was deep in the WTF zone, but not once did I think it wasn't real, I was so engrossed in the story having heard they made changes to the fight scene. So there I am my mouth hanging open still when Jasper gets decapitated. Plus puppies die and that's just so friggin' wrong, so I'm seething on my seat and then snap we are back with Alice's hand in Aro's as he has witnessed his own destruction.

And I'm like - super! Man, that I really really really enjoyed! Especially Aro fighting his way off a sinking ship that is fighting to find a way to not have to engage the Cullens in war, and die himself. Now had I read Breaking Dawn even a year before this, I might have a remembered it, Alice showing him his future, but as I didn't it was a nice end surprise for me!

MOVIE REVIEW - HUNGER GAMES

Hungry for a re-watch!

I did review Hunger Games about a year ago if I'm not mistakes, the book that is - and I did give it 5 stars! At this time I was still occasionally reviewing YA novels, then my blog took roots in the romance genre and that was the end of YA for me.

That said! I still had to pick up the DVD as it came out this last weekend, after all I did love the book so I had to see how the movie turned out. I have become very good at not associating books with movies made of them, I'm 80% sure I cannot think of the book when I'm watching a movie. With Hunger Games it was really easy!

I watched it last night and I couldn't have been happier. Here are few points I really did love.

Katniss wasn't a waif thin overly sexy teenager with make-up and bad attitude - see I was worried they'd go for that but instead she was healthy looking girl, a character with great emotional depth and protect my own attitude. I loved how she was taking in rue as substitute little sister and actually caring for Peeta.

I loved the lack of inner narrative ( ahem, like twilight saga has ), the silence was lot more powerful than I just killed someone and a freak out, you could really see it in her how it affected her. Kudos!

I loved Haymitch! Well--- Woody Harrelson really can play the odd balls and pull off the sobering act even in YA dystopian flick. It's a joy to watch him work!

I loved that they didn't over to the Gale-Katniss- Peeta love triangle. I was expecting more but luckily they had kept it in the low simmer, you could see it in Gale and in Peeta but I loved how indifferent Katniss was when she wasn't hamming it for the crowd.

The werewolves weren't bipedal! Wohoo! That would not have worked. ( okay, so they were werewolves but in the book they came off more as ones ) These dawg were more like Hellhounds and that I did love love love, tho why make them all Pit Bull? Bad generalization, I would have gone with dachshunds or something, ahem - so maybe wolf hounds would have been better.

So was there anything I didn't love?

That's fairly easy - I can't think of anything, and when it's that good you have to give it 5 stars!

REVIEW - BARCODE: LEGEND OF APOLLO

"In this world, humans are born with tattoos known as barcodes. The data contains mythological powers that make arena fights very entertaining. Yet, Spencer's codes are different. They seem to draw him into a comforting darkness. It's in this hell that he learns the truth about his corrupt family and how he murdered his mother."

"Spencer Colt must return to his last year of Colt Academy - the academic institute for gladiators. The school and arena are run by his father, a wealthy businessman too occupied to remember his son's 19th birthday. Spencer could care less. He's a sarcastic jerk that wants to finish his final year without another person mentioning his destiny, to reunite America.

On his first day back, his family's helicopter plunges nose first into the battlefield. As bloodied and limp bodies are dragged across the stadium, a mysterious boy named Kode emerges.

Spencer hardly has time to show concern for his recovering family members when he and his beautiful nemesis, Michelle Miyamoto, are attacked by a naked and manic Kode. Michelle promises to train with Spencer after they discover the lunatic's intentions, but she has trouble of her own. She must keep the practice a secret for her friendship to survive.

In this world, humans are born with tattoos known as barcodes. The data contains mythological powers that make arena fights very entertaining. Yet, Spencer's codes are different. They seem to draw him into a comforting darkness. It's in this hell that he learns the truth about his corrupt family and how he murdered his mother." ~From Goodreads

I've been off the YA genre for a long time now, the last YA book I read was The Hunger Games in the fall... so reading Barcode was something out of the ordinary for me, a woman who's found her niche in romance.

Barcode is first of all well written, Ross writes text that is engaging and fun! Barcode was a joy to read, it didn't get boring or still and the characters were three dimensional with personal struggles and package and that made them very interesting which helps make the novel entertaining.

The plot was interesting, the gifts or powers from the gods and the whole gladiator wipe is really entertaining,  the world is going towards dystopia which is interesting to read, like the lack of trees and nature, and the hero isn't exactly nice. He really is almost bit evil, snarky, temperamental and selfish - I think he makes for one of the most interesting characters I've met on the genre. You know when you're a kid and you like to play the bad guy in games well Spencer is kinda like that. I also really really enjoyed his bantering and interaction with Michelle, loved it really!

Give Barcode a go if you like YA with loads of adventure, and action and a really unique hero/anti-hero. ;)

SHAPE - APRIL 2012

If you are like me and sometimes don't get to mags right away then you might have this April Edition still unread. Though this time in my case the Finnish store I went to didn't yet have the "current" edition - which is why I decided to order Shape again!

The first thing in the cover that got me was Alison Sweeney, I love her in The Biggest Loser ( yes I do watch that show! I'm a huge Jillian Michaels fan ).

The second was The Hunger Games Workout - I was expecting some running, climbing or something to go with the mood of the book! But no, what I got was just the actresses who played Glimmer doing moves, bummer. :(  Get in to fighting shape, okay I did get that and the moves were really strength building.

The Sexier By Summer workout I loved! I love doing the 2. Booty Booster move, it's easy but efficient and who doesn't want a perkier butt! A hint, the lower angle your knees butt and feet make the more bunch the lift and point has to your abs as well. ( click for a bigger pic )
Also 5. The High-Kick Dips were a workout for the arms and butt!

Of course my favorites are the Success Stories and the Weight-Loss Diary girl Yasmin. It's the best source of inspiration! I especially loved Kathy's 80 pound loss with Wii Fit and kick boxing.

I think the most emotional article in this issue was My Boyfriend Almost Killed Me - I've always had trouble believing that a strong woman could get bullied and abused but this story really told how it happened to her, bit by bit, and now I have to say it really can happen to anyone who meets a manipulative man, if they don't know these warning signs : Gets serious too quickly, easily jealous, blames his exes, pressures to spend less time with family and friends, wants to move far from said family and friends, criticizes and puts you down subtly ( you're not as smart, or as pretty or as slim as... ).

Another great 164 pages! Shapes always has the best test on apparel and footwear, but also the beauty tips, and health tip - like did you know to buy asparagus with the tips close together instead of open for more flavor... well I know now! And did you know that with more iron in your system your exercises will be more efficient and your moves faster? Now you do!

Let's get fit!

GUEST BLOG: WHAT IS NEW ADULT?

I have the pleasure to welcome to For The Love of Reading, Lynn Rush, an amazing author who has come by to talk a little about her new book Awaited ( which rocked, btw ) and about the in-between of Young Adult and Adult... here we go!

What is New Adult?
by Lynn Rush

One question I often get asked is, “What is New Adult?”

Crescent Moon Press has really taken the leap into this exciting new space, and I’m honored to be one of their first authors.

If you think about it, Young Adult ( YA ) is a branch of children’s stories—just the older end of it. If you’re someone who likes to see numbers, the age ranges for YA are anywhere from 12-16 or so.
Then, you have the adult books. Romantically, they can be pretty intense. Some are very descriptive and deal with some heavy adult life issues.

But what about the middle ground? Readers who want a little more than the sweet romance of the young teen years yet those who aren’t ready for the heavy, intense romance of the adult novels…

***CUE Lynn Rush***

That’s where I come in. :) Here’s a little definition that works pretty well to describe New Adult:

Young adult stories are just as complex as any mainstream novel, however you'll find the romantic element is handled more gently in comparison. Also, the characters are generally in Middle School or High School. New Adult novels take the story to the next level romantically. The characters are usually out of school and confronted with life challenges.

Sure, some of the characters in my Wasteland Trilogy ( http://lynnrush.com/the-wasteland-trilogy/ ) might be four-hundred to eleven-hundred years old, but they look twenty-something. And the level of romance throughout the stories is on the sweeter side of hot. So it’s a nice fit.

Now, my Violet Night Trilogy ( http://lynnrush.com/the-violet-night-trilogy/emma/ ), which starts releasing October 2012, the main characters really ARE in their twenties and actually live on a college campus, so that’s even closer to the New Adult definition.

What do you think? Have you heard of this New Adult category? If not, you should leave a comment here today, I’ll give away a free e-book of Wasteland and an e-ARC of Awaited, because you just HAVE to give it a try. Be sure to leave your email on your comment so I know how to reach you, okay?

2 GUEST BLOGS - BLIND SIGHT

Inspirations from literature and bad table manners

There are two sides to every story.

That's the major premise behind how Blind Sight is written. Anyone who has ever listened to grandparents talk to each other without their hearing aids knows how funny those conversations can be. What one of them says is not always what the other one hears. Or trying to understand someone when their mouth is full, I wanted to capture the misunderstandings that occur when the perspective is limited to a single point of view, but I couldn't do it alone.

I was first inspired by Tom Stoppard who turned Shakespeare's tragedy, Hamlet into the comedy Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead. Tom Stoppard's play follows the plot of Hamlet through the point of view of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, giving them their own voice and own plot so that even though it is the same story line, it is a very different story. It was exactly what I expected out of Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West.

I made a few futile attempts to write the same story from different perspectives and eventually let the idea drop. I couldn't get the two sides different enough to where it felt like two different voices, but then I met Ermisenda on an RP site of all places. She was a brilliant writer, but more than that, she made me a better writer. We played off each other in a way that I just can't explain unless you've ever found that other RPer with whom you just click.

It was a true partnership, making Blind Sight a superior novel to anything we could have put together individually. It wasn't working from an already written manuscript and trying to put a new spin on it. We worked together every step of the way, literally RPing scenes over MSN and Skype since we live half a world apart.

Eliabeth Hawthorne

Dreams, imagination, and perspectives

I had a dream; I wanted to write novels. I have been writing since I joined a Harry Potter guild on Neopets at twelve years old. You could write short pieces to receive points. Writing didn't stop there.

I had a vivid imagination; I wanted to know more. Often, after finishing a book I pondered about how the story could have been retold from a different perspective, maybe a different character. What if we were able to read the story of Snape over the course of seven novels rather than Harry Potter?

I had chance on my side; I met Eliabeth and we were two young women crazy about writing. So, what did we do? We wrote. How did we write? The nature of our friendship began on a role-playing site whereby we wrote from different characters to create scenes and stories.

We had a dream, vivid imagination and each other. What more did we need? Not much else as we embarked on an amazing journey and wrote Blind Sight despite living half the globe away.

Writing a novel was a dream I have had for a long time but I was so excited to write a two-sided novel that followed two different perspectives. It was an ambitious choice for us to make but one of the best. We have not only challenged ourselves but have provided readers with a new way of reading. For those who only wish to read one side, that is okay, but for those of us who are interested in the power of different perspectives and multiple stories we have another side to offer.

The power of multiple stories cannot be emphasized enough in our daily lives. How many times have we heard one story about an acquaintance but once we have met them, we receive a second story, in which might completely contradict the first. Is either one wrong? Maybe not. But your understanding of the person, or novel in the case, is enriched.

Growing up in a Spanish family and living in Australia has taught me a lot about language in my, so far, short life. My very first language was Spanish, but when school started English became my "mother" tongue. A simple saying can dramatically change through translation, those of you who know more than one language will understand this perfectly. I have had to translate pieces of Spanish into English for friends and even though the words I have translated make sense in English, only I can grasp the full meaning and implications of the phrase.

Staying open minded, listening to varied opinions and soaking up what we can from the zillions of stories out there in the world is part of life. Eliabeth and I have channeled the essence of that concept into our first two-sided novel. We live on an earth with billions of people. We all think differently, we see the world differently and together, we are the characters of humanity. I am inspired by dreams, imagination and people.

The story of Leocardo, Aniela, and Odette in Blind Sight can be enjoyed through one color, one perspective but, why limit yourself? There is not only another color to live through but together, a new range of shades to enjoy.

A bundle of joy wrapped in a white feather boa streaked down the hall. Her long blonde hair flowed out behind her. Dressed in a vintage dress several sizes too large, Edaion’s youngest princess had just come out from playing dress up in her mother’s closet. Aniela wore oversized tortoise-shell aviator sunglasses and a necklace of pearls that dragged on the floor, threatening to trip her as she ran barefoot toward her sister’s room. The energetic four-year-old girl pushed open the bedroom door without knocking, still learning appropriate boundaries.

Seven-year-old Tatiana sat on her bed, her dark hair and dark eyes a stark contrast to Aniela’s baby blues. One of their mother’s favorite lamps levitated up and down; it moved slowly through the air. Tatiana never let it exceed six inches from the ground while she practiced her magic. All three of the Dawson children had inherited telekinesis from their mother. Tatiana specialized in large, heavy objects. Her twin, Theodore, who sat at Tatiana’s desk playing solitaire in the air, specialized in multiple small objects. Aniela had yet to develop a specialty.

“Hi Ana,” Theodore said. The door swung shut without any help from his sister.

“Hi Teo,” Aniela replied, sometimes still struggling with her t-h sounds.

Aniela tried to jump on her sister’s bed, but it was too high, causing her to miss and slide down until her feet once again touched the soft rug. She backed up and took a running leap. Aniela’s forehead smacked into Tatiana’s palm and she toppled backward onto to floor. Theodore frowned. His brow furrowed as he shook his head, but he did not comment as Aniela crawled up onto his lap instead. Much like his role in life, his looks fell somewhere between the two girls’. He had Tatiana’s intelligent brown eyes and Aniela’s light blonde hair. While he lacked Aniela’s innocence, he also lacked Tatiana’s smugness. He was the middle; one they could both enjoy.

“What do you want?” Tatiana droned in her ever present annoyed tone.

“Where does magic come from?” Aniela watched the lamp travel fluidly through the air as Tatiana moved it to the floor before answering.

“Everyone knows that a boat shipwrecked on the island and that one of our ancestors was the captain.”

“They were cursed for hunting on the island.” Theodore took up the story.

Aniela looked back and forth between her siblings, watching them trade off the conversation like a ball in a tennis match and quickly lost interest.

“I want to go to the park,” she announced.

“I’ll see if Marcus can drive us,” Theodore offered. Rarely did the king or queen have time to chaperone their children.

Simultaneously, and with practiced ease, the cards moved into a neat pile on Tatiana’s desk as Theodore picked Aniela off his lap and set her on the floor. Tatiana’s eyes flickered with new-found mischievousness as her twin closed the door behind him and waved Aniela over. Excited to be included, Aniela scrambled over, but Tatiana stopped her before she could climb onto the bed. She leaned in close, Tatiana’s voice barely more than a whisper. Something in her voice made Aniela feel the way she did before she snuck into their mother’s closet without permission.

Tatiana’s eyes glistened. “You know what we should do?”

“What?” Aniela bounced as she failed to contain her enthusiasm.

“We should play hide and seek at the park, but you know how Theo always finds you so quick?” She paused, lowering her voice. “So when we get there, you go hide, and I’ll give you a head start before I tell Theo it’s time to look for you.” If Aniela had known about Alice in Wonderland, she would have compared Tatiana’s smile to that of the Cheshire Cat’s.

“Okay!” Aniela agreed enthusiastically. She put her fingers to her lips and turned an invisible key, offering it to Tatiana for safekeeping. Tatiana did not play along, letting the would-be key fall onto the bed untouched.

“And no telling Theo,” Tatiana emphasized. “I’ll tell him, but before we go you had better put Mum’s clothes back where you found them.”

“Okay.” Aniela sprinted out of the room and back down the hall. She placed the clothes back in the trunk at the back of her mother’s closet, pearls and all. She then returned to Tatiana’s room to find Theodore waiting and Tatiana ready to go. They piled into a waiting car; Theodore placed himself between the two girls. The driver would stay with them in place of a bodyguard, for while no one had expanded on the subject, Aniela knew there was some kind of protection in place that made them unnecessary.

Aniela pressed her face to glass as she watched the houses go by. “We here! We here!” she celebrated.

Theodore helped Aniela as she fumbled to get out of the car.

“You’ll want to chew some gum after you smoke or Mum will smell it on your breath,” Tatiana told Marcus as she climbed out. He coughed and Theodore’s eyes narrowed. “What? It’s true!”

Once Aniela was freed from her booster seat, she shot out of the car and went to find a suitable hiding place. She looked around and chose the jungle gym. Hiding in one of the many colorful tunnels, she listened for either of her siblings to start counting. When she did not hear any, she assumed she was safely hidden. Excited about the game, she was determined to stay put, at least until her short attention span got the better of her. Her gaze fell on two boys sitting in the gravel near the swing set; one was holding a vehemently protesting cat while the other pulled its whiskers.

“Stop it! Stop being mean!” her voice echoed through the tunnel. She crawled out and ran back to the twins.

She pulled on the hem of Theodore’s shirt with one hand and pointed with the other. “Mean boys are being mean to a kitty!” she screamed and turned to Tatiana. “Fix it!”

Aniela’s anger elevated once Tatiana’s eyes fell on the boys, able to read her sibling’s mood whether she wanted to or not. She moved behind Theodore, pushing on his lower back and keeping directly behind him as if he were an impenetrable wall. Tatiana walked over with an intimidating gait, so quiet in her movements that despite Aniela’s yelling, the boys did not look up until her shadow was upon them. One look at her and they both shot off in the opposite direction, leaving the cat to run off as well.

“Awe!” Aniela yelled, “Kitty! Kitty come back! I wanna take you home! Tia get it!”

“Ana, don’t be silly. The cat is not going to want to be caught after that.”

“But I wanna make it feel better. Tia use your ma-muh…” she was muffled by Theodore’s hand cupping her mouth. She huffed at him, but his hand remained firm as he began forcibly walking her back to the car.

“Not a word until we get home,” he hissed.

Confused, she looked up at him, unable to understand why he was angry now that the cat was free, but he remained silent.

“Marcus, gum please.” Tatiana shot out a demanding hand between the front seats once she joined them. He handed her two pieces and she passed one to Theodore.

“I want gum,” Aniela whined. The first and only time she had been given gum, she had swallowed it.

“You’re too young,” Tatiana gloated, blowing a large bubble and popping it with her teeth.

“Am not!” Aniela puffed out her bottom lip and made sad puppy dog eyes at her brother who she no longer felt was mad at her.

Tatiana reached across Theodore and pulled one of Aniela’s shoestrings, untying it in one fluid motion. “You’re too young until you can tie your shoe.”

“I can,” Aniela shot, bringing her foot up close and playing with the laces. Her tongue wiggled around, poking out of the corner of her mouth in determination. It kept her busy the whole way home until eventually, Theodore reached over and helped.

“Ana, you still want gum?” Tatiana asked once they were home.

“Yes please!” she held out her hand expectantly.

“Here.” Tatiana took the piece of gum out of her mouth and placed it in Aniela’s hand. A familiar grin spread across Tatiana’s face.

Aniela’s jaw dropped and her nose wrinkled in mortified disgust. Saliva pooled in the palm of her hand as it slid off the damp wad while she stared at it until Theodore took it from her. Aniela wiped her hand on Theodore’s shirt and he made no signs of minding, but as soon as Tatiana started to do the same, he gave her a dark glare and she wiped her fingers on her own shirt instead.

Theodore took Aniela by the hand and walked her to her room. “Stay. I will be right back and we can talk about why I had to cut you off in the park,” he commanded. He closed the door behind him. She waited for his footsteps to fade down the marble hallway before tiptoeing out of her room and back into her sister’s.

“What now?” Tatiana groaned.

“Why can’t we use magic outside?”

Tatiana had been lying on her back but rolled over on the bed before she answered. The same grin she had worn that morning pulled at the corners of her lips. “If you use magic, or mention it outside the house, in the middle of the night, when the lights are out and you’re sound asleep…”

“You just don’t!” Theodore interjected firmly. The door to Tatiana’s room had swung open so forcefully it collided with the wall, cutting Tatiana off mid-sentence. “Inside is one thing, but outside it is forbidden.” Theodore informed Aniela before Tatiana could contine.

Tatiana pouted and rolled back over, but Aniela could not help but worry where the story had been going. All sorts of terrible scenarios played through her vivid imagination involving monsters in the closet or bugs that came and carried people away in their sleep, but she did not want to know badly enough to ask Tatiana to continue. Theodore took her by the hand, this time more gently, and led her back to her room.

“Ana, don’t let Tia scare you. Magic is not scary; it is a gift. You will understand when you are older. For now, you do not want to get in trouble, do you?”

Aniela shook her head.

Forcing my eyes to open, I found myself outside the Cradlehack. I was standing in Faris’s arms, my head against his chest, my fingers entwined in his black vest. It was a smooth fabric that felt like silk. A cloth no one had worn outside of ceremonies since before the Tidal Years. This boy was no common citizen. His earthy-sweet smell made me feel hypnotically safe, as we stood among the crowd fleeing down the hillside. He lifted my chin, stared in my eyes. But this wasn’t some dumb player’s move.

No, a mysterious thing stirred behind his silvery-gray eyes.

“Feel better, Chela?” he asked. I nodded.

“Thanks for helping me,” I said, still fighting a light head. Still afraid the dreaded black blobs lingered somewhere around us. Somewhat ashamed I’d spoken so horribly to him moments ago.

“You probably shouldn’t do that,” he said.

    “Do what?”

    “Thank me.”

“Why? Because I caught you using alchemy? That’s what your kind does. Make magic in the shadows, right?” I said.

His left eye ticked. The girl in the hoodie had called him a Caducean. Could it be possible? Father told me Caduceans were a mythical group—demon slayers from a time long gone. Yet, here I stood with a boy who didn’t deny my claim.

Around us, fewer people were leaving the Shack. They paid no attention to the two idiots standing and staring at each other. Did Jalen and Lexa make it out safely?  They were taking forever to reach me.
Did I really want them to find me?

“They’ll call me, now, and make me a witness against you. I’m sorry, but I already have too many problems. So I—I have to tell the truth,” I said.

“That won’t be a problem.” Faris smiled, a catchy one that lit his face up. I couldn’t decide whether it was angelic or downright wicked. Just like I couldn’t remember where I’d ever heard an accent like his. What kind was it? Old southern? Old English? Irish? It sounded like a mix of all three, but with a deep timbre, making him sound god like. “In a few minutes, you won’t remember me or any of this.”

“Really? How do you figure that?” I asked, heart racing.

“Because my gift to you…” He moved his face closer to mine, pulling me into whatever was happening in his head. “My gift is to remove memories that cause you pain.”

“Okay, um, right.” Had I lost my mind? It probably wouldn’t have hurt to scream.

He held my gaze, locking me into something I couldn’t explain. A tear puckered up in his left eye, and slid down his cheek where it stopped on his top lip. Then he blinked, snapping us out of whatever place he’d taken us to, and glanced behind my head. “Here comes your dark knight,” he said, easing his arms away from me.

He strolled off into the last group of stragglers hanging around the Shack. How did he know my nickname for Jalen?

I wiped away a tear rolling down my right cheek.

“Chela, there you are. You scared me, girl.” Jalen’s voice cut into the moment. He spun me around to face him. I blinked, clearing my eyes. “What’s wrong? Did you get hurt?”

I glanced around us. The boy was gone. A dull headache joined the fuzziness in my head. Lost inside a clouded mind, I forgot what I wanted to say. The entire night’s events were hazy.

    I fumbled with my thoughts.

What happened to me in there?
