"She’s the only one who can see through his golden boy façade to the broken god within…

Chrysander Notos, Supreme God of the South Wind and Summer, is on a mission: save Eurus from his death sentence and prove his troubled brother can be redeemed. But Eurus fights back, triggering vicious summer storms that threaten the mortal realm, dangerously drain Chrys, and earn the ire of the Olympic gods who ordered Eurus dead.

Laney Summerlyn refuses to give up her grandfather’s horse farm, despite her deteriorating vision. More than ever, she needs the organized routine of her life at Summerlyn Stables, until a ferocious storm brings an impossible—and beautiful—creature crashing down from the heavens.

Injured while fighting Eurus, Chrys finds himself at the mercy of a mortal woman whose compassion and acceptance he can’t resist. As they surrender to the passion flaring between them, immortal enemies close in, forcing Chrys to choose between his brother and the only woman who’s ever loved the real him."  ~ From Goodreads

First of all I love Laura Kaye's books and I've loved the Hearts of the Anemoi series! She's a super talented writer with a nag for writing emotion filled, entertaining romances! That said I was slightly bummed with South of Surrender, it's not that the writing were bad, it was great but I had little bit of a problem with the plot this time...

Which leaked into the characters as well. First, I loved Laney, I loved her struggles, her strength in front of her deteriorating sight, I loved her freak outs and her skepticism with gods and furies and what not dropping in at the small farm house. What I had a problem with was this, the book was way too focused on Eurus, and Chrys way too focused on catching Eurus. When he was with Laney he though of catching Eurus, when he wasn't with her he was thinking about catching the guy. That just doesn't spell great romance to me. And I didn't really like Chrys for that, though he made a lot of it up in all the tender loving moments with Laney. :)

All the stuff that I love about Laura Kaye's writing was her, and pretty much the only thing I had a problem with, personally, was too much thinking of/on/about Eurus. I liked the book, but it just didn't have the Awesomeness to me as the first two books had. So I am slightly skeptic moving into the next book, but I will read it, I have to, I love the series! :)

ISIS EROTICA (GIVEAWAY)

a Rafflecopter giveaway

"Would you dare step back in time to find Mr. Right?

A frustrated Las Vegas party girl discovers a Red Mirror in an antique mall and succumbs to the lure of the bold-eyed woman in the glass. “Come,” the Mirror beckons, “taste of a life more sensuous than any dream.”

The exotic life that tempts is one she once lived as Isis, priestess in the mystic cult of Hathor, Egyptian Goddess of Love. "I have secrets," her aura teased. "Wonderful secrets that only I can share."

On the banks of the ancient Nile, she meets River God of bronzed flesh and snowy linen. "You shall fly to the stars with my tongue on your lotus," he breathes in her ear. Alas, the gods have other plans. Isis finds herself first on a quest for the all-powerful Emerald Tablet, and then without warning, back in Las Vegas.

Uncertain and unnerved, Isis joins best friend Barb for a surprise encounter that compels her to go back through the Red Mirror in search of River God. But a desert hunt goes all wrong, and Isis the sex slave lands in the grip of the Persian General's thick fingers. "If you please me," he proposes, "you will belong to me and me alone, but only as long as I am pleased." One fateful night, a ride on a comet shows Isis the dark side of love and sets the price she must pay for freedom."

"There is more to this collection than a love story. Add in reincarnation and mysterious artifacts that cross time. The writing is high quality and full of imagery. I highly recommend Ms Gore's work."

Four hot men crossing back and forth through time. They all want her. Who will have her? Does she have to choose?

Who says a woman should have only one man?

Who says there's a Mr. Right?

One man is not enough for Isis. One life is not enough.

She has the Power - The Hathor Power.

Author's note: If you want to go right to the juicy parts, use the special Table of Contents to jump to those vignettes.

"I was transported through time to a world of Egyptian gods and goddesses, temples and high priestesses, honeyed dates and cleansing oils. And a woman who will never be satisfied by just one man, although Isis does love them all with great intensity. She has great taste too - these men are to die for."

The Isis Erotica collection is comprised of three connected adventures  that can be downloaded as ebooks in three parts: The Red Mirror, The Persian General and The Great Green

Part One: The Red Mirror. Who knew an old mirror in an antique store would promise pleasures more sensuous than any dream? Isis meets River God of bronzed flesh and snowy linen, the man with The Touch. She will do anything to feel that touch, even cross through time.

Part Two: The Persian General. A wild desert hunt goes all wrong when Isis is kidnapped by the Persian General. A bull of a man with legs like the columns of a temple, he holds her life in his thick fingers. But Isis has a destiny, and Isis has the Power - the Hathor Power.

Part Three: The Great Green. Isis is the chosen one, chosen by her father Hermes Trismegistus to protect the Emerald Tablet. But Isis needs protection herself from the evil Crown Prince and the invading Persians. Cosmic forces bring together the circle of souls in two passion-filled nights - one below deck on River God's ship on the Nile and the other on the Las Vegas Strip.

CELTIC MYTHOLOGY & GODDESS ON THE RUN - A GUEST BLOG WITH GIVEAWAY

A Curiosity for the Holy Water Warriors
by Marne Ann Kirk

One of my most fascinating little discovering I've come across, while researching Celtic mythology for Goddess on the Run, was a place in Halstatt, Austria called the Halstatt Beinhaus—the House of Bones. Never been? Me neither, but it’s definitely going on my bucket list. I’m a bit of a weird duck, as you might have guessed by now. It goes with the territory of being a writer, I think, being a little odd, thinking about things from a different angle than most people might.

For example, just today I’m walking through a hotel we’re staying in ( we’re still in Las Vegas, and the Mr. and Mrs. Olympia is going on Right Now. It’s kinda cool, I won’t lie… ), and there is this obviously famous man with a line of fans wanting pictures with him. Now, this man is B-U-I-L-T. We are talking huge, with all of these muscles bulging out of his body like they’re trying to escape. And all I can think is, wouldn't it be cool to trace all of those muscles with a hot pink magic marker and then walk away? What would he do? I made the mistake of saying it out loud, and my daughter about spewed her soda all over the poor guy. Anyway, I digress; but the point is that writers just don’t think the same way everyone else does ( and if it’s just me, please allow me my delusion ).

And back to my story, writers are odd and I love, love, love cemeteries. I love walking through them and reading the headstones, taking pictures of them, going on tours through them. It’s the histories, the stories being told in the marble and stone, that I enjoy so much. I find ideas in these stories, inspiration. So imagine my surprise and excitement when I found this curiosity. Hallstatt is a small town ( less than 1,000 people ) in the Dachstein mountain range . It hugs the Hallstätter See ( a lake ) and the town’s main resource, salt, is from the surrounding mountains. It’s isolation and its age as a town worked well for the Holy Water Warrior tales, as I needed an origin for the Tuatha de Danaan and Danu ( you might be thinking the Celtic mythology began in Ireland, Scotland, or up in that part of the world; but it actually began on the main continent and moved into those areas as the people moved. It’s a very fascinating town, and someday I will visit it. )

However, the House of Bones was the thing that cinched the deal for me on my decision on where to begin. It might not be obvious in Goddess on the Run ( I don’t mention the name of the village in Teagan’s story ), but Halstatt is going to play a bigger role as the Tales come out. It’s where the Goddess Danu finds the most solace, considers her true home of her chosen people. The House of Bones is going to come into play, as well. In at least one of the Tales, it’s going to play a huge role, because things this fascinating deserve notice.

What is it, exactly? Well, here’s a picture of the things that I find amazing, then…

Halstatt is so small because it physically cannot grow, due to where it is between the lake and the mountain. However, the town’s been around since before Christ’s time. So, how do you make room for the dead? Every ten to fifteen years, the bodies in the cemetery are exhumed, the bones are bleached by the sun to clean them. Then, the survivors are able to paint the skulls, personalize them so the loved one isn't forgotten, before the skull is placed in its new home. How romantic is that? I think it’s amazing. Anyway, that’s the House of Bones in Halstatt, and a little insight into the background for Goddess on the Run and the Holy Water Warriors’ series.

Thank you so much for having me today. I hope you find this type of thing as crazy-cool as I do.

"All Fomorian Hells are about to break loose on earth, making human souls the daily special, if the Tuatha de Danaan can’t stop it.

Teagan, a Celtic demi-goddess hiding from her destiny in small-town Colorado, wants nothing to do with her mother’s forgotten realm or the drama of a battle of the gods. And Merric is forbidden fruit she’s too smart to taste.

Merric, leader of the Tuatha de Danaan warriors, has other plans. Teagan holds the key to salvation, for both him and their worlds, whether she wants to or not. He’ll do whatever it takes to convince her of her duty.

But can he find the key to her heart?"

Excerpt: Sexy little excerpt, sans jeans. ;)

Ella has lost it all, her parents, her husband- cheating bastard - and her brother, releasing his ashes into the sea while on board their sailing boat True Blue a storm hits, even while a great sailor she can't fight the storm and as she hits the frigid water her world goes black and she believes this is it.

Zephyros, the God of the West Wind, is storming about his nephew's happiness, while he never has had any, only betrayal and disappointment, but just before it's too late he realizes his actions have but an innocent near death and he barely saves the woman from his storm.

Deeply regretful of his carelessness he sees her to shore, but can't bring himself to leave before he sees she's making a recovery, but the woman keeps him coming back again and again until he makes the mistake of materializing at the wrong time and getting an earful from Ella. But as they begin to get to know each other and as Zeph feels the need to heal the injuries his storm caused it dawns to Ella that Zeph is more than just a stalker - and there is more to the world than she ever thought.

But with Eurus, Zeph's estranged brother and ruler of the East Wind, dead set on breaking any happiness Zeph has Ella isn't safe, but even if Zeph can protect her against his brother's maliciousness can he protect her from his own fears of betrayal that's branded on his soul.

"God I need more of you." He kissed up the other side of her neck, dragging his weight over her in the most maddeningly delicious way. She drew her knees up, adjusting him so he fell closer to where she needed him.
"Ella," he groaned and traced the shell of her ear with his tongue. "What do you want? This time you tell me. I don't want to make any mistakes here, and I"-he swallowed thickly-"I can't...I have to..."
She whimpered. Heart, body and mind aligned she didn't need to think about it. "In me. Need you in me." His weight disappeared. Then so did she. For a split second, he physical self seemed to vanish. And then they were on the bed in her room.
Dazed and awed, she laughed. "What just happened?" Heavy-lidded eyes traced over her face. "I don't have the patience to act human right now."

Oh ever since reading North of Need I've been so patiently waiting for Laura Kaye's next Hearts of Anemoi book - because I fell in love with North of Need and the way Kaye tells stories, they are happy but emotional, romantic and so sexy!

Kaye has a talent with words and creating with them a believable world with sexy well built gods and women who catch their eyes - and that ladies makes West of Want such a great romance! I could go on and on how well written West of Want is, how engaging the story is and how you are so invested it hurts when our couple goes through a rough patch - but I have to get on with the review and get to gushing about how hot Zeph is. ;)

I loved the story in West of Want, Ella's broken heart, Zeph's slowly emerging hope for future and Eurus's menacing presence through out the book. The Ancient Greek history bits were intriguing and I loved how Kaye wrapped them all in there in subtle way, and I loved all the coincidents trying to tell Zeph she was perfect for her.

I've said "loved" like four times now but bare with me because there will be more. ;)

Sometimes when you write a character like Ella who has gone through so much heartbreak and sorrow they can become downers - but not Ella, she still has that spark of life, that kindness and she fights for reasons to live and have a good life even with her parents and her brother dead and her ex-husbands cheating still a fresh cut. You can't help but love Ella and her M&M addiction.

Zeph, oh what to say about this guy... oh I know, Hot! Want me to elaborate? Okay here goes. Take one moody Supreme God of the West Wind who's been betrayed hundred times over, with a wicked hot body, and give him family issue big enough to sink titanic and then just watch what happens when he begins to fall for our heroine. You can help but fall in love as well, especially when the Supreme God gets his first taste of M&Ms. The depth he has and the way he feels for Ella hooks any romance reader to this story.

The romance between Ella and Zeph has to be one of my favorites, it's right up there with Megan and Owen ( who does make an appearance! ) from North of Need and Rhage and Mary from Lover Eternal to name a few. Like with all my faves there has to be love, emotional hook, heartbreak and healing - and there must be hot love scenes... so welcome to West of Want to that crowd!

It's no wonder people went crazy for this series, once you get a taste of Hearts of Anemoi you can't let go... and like many ladies I too cannot wait for South of Surrender to come out in 2013!

West of Want isn't a stand alone, read North of Need first, trust me it's just as good and you'll love Megan and Owen too, see my 5 star review of North of Need. Here is a NoN teaser:

"A deep sound of satisfaction rumbled low in his throat and ricocheted down her body. Those soft lips found hers, already open, waiting for his touch. With his kiss, he possessed her. His scent—winter spice and male—filled her senses. His body covered her. She could live on the cool, sweet taste of his tongue. And, God, his little moans and grunts reverberated right down to the wet heat between her legs.

He trailed open-mouthed kisses over her cheek to her ear, sucked her lobe between his lips and flicked it with his tongue. She gasped as goose bumps erupted everywhere and she offered her neck to his exploration.

“I want you, Megan. Be mine. Gods.”

REVIEW - MEDUSA, A LOVE STORY

"Ariston goes to war with a full heart... and dreadful foreboding. He learns too late of the danger Medusa faces, alone, and a Persian blade sends him into the Underworld. But death, curses, nor the wrath of the Gods will keep him from returning to her. Poseidon will use Greece's war to get what he wants: Medusa. He does not care that she belongs to another. He does not care that she will be damned. He is a God, an Olympian, and she will be his."

"It's said love can change a person. Medusa wasn't always a monster...

Medusa is ruled by duty, to her Titan father and the Goddess Athena. She's no room for the tenderness her warrior guard, Ariston, stirs. When Olympus frees her from service, her heart leads her into the arms of the guard she loves... and curses her as the creature with serpent locks.

Ariston goes to war with a full heart... and dreadful foreboding.

He is a God, an Olympian, and she will be his." ~From Goodreads

This really is a book for fans of historical romance and lovers of ancient Greece - it's told in a epic, dramatic style and it's not a happy romance, it's very emotional and dark, like I said very dramatic. Even the text has that almost ancient tragedy feel to it.

I loved the plot, it was still romance but it had a Troy ( the movie ) feel to it. If you've been reading my reviews you know I absolutely love forbidden love, there is something very epic about it, Romeo and Juliet started it but luckily romance has those storylines as well and they tend to make me quite happy. I've always been in love with the stories about the Olympian gods and goddesses so this story was right up my alley, though maybe a little bit too dramatic for my taste - I like my romance with the trials and troubles but also with the lightness of love and the joy it brings to it's holders even before it slips their finger, to be returned later. I think Medusa: A Love Story wasn't light enough for my escape from reality.

The romance was lovely, I loved the fact that in the beginning Ariston couldn't even touch  her and that just adds so much to the first touch, the first forbidden kiss, not to mention how hot their first time would be. But even though this was a love story, the love was shadowed by the darkness of the plot, the scheming, war and everything between. It was wonderful reading Medusa's story as a love story, everyone sees her as this horrible witch in the stories so it's great to have a more innocent Medusa, one with compassion and love - for that alone this story is a great read for fans of ancient Greece and romance.

REVIEW - PRIESTESS OF THE NILE (WITH EXCERPT)

"Sobek begins to fight the attraction he feels for her because it is forbidden for a God to love a Human, a law so enforced that it would be the death of the human. But the near death of Merys makes him throw away his charade and let her see just who he is... and just how much he lusts after her."

Excerpt: Chapter 1

Egypt 1500 BC. Sobek, the Crocodile God, is drawn to one of his old, now a ruin, temple, where he hears one of his old song sung by a beautiful young woman. Unable to stop himself he introduces himself as a mere man asking to spend an hour in conversation.

Merys, the ill-fated daughter from a the village scribe's earlier marriage, spends an evening exchanging stories with a man dressed like a wealthy merchant, a man like she's never known before, handsome, kind and intriguing.

Their meetings become frequent, and Sobek begins to fight the attraction he feels for her because it is forbidden for a God to love a Human, a law so enforced that it would be the death of the human. But the near death of Merys makes him throw away his charade and let her see just who he is... and just how much he lusts after her.

A simple, entertaining story of love of insurmountable obstacles in the ancient Egypt, with its vast amount of gods and goddesses, pharaohs and mere men and women of its land. Priestess of the Nile is short story of love that either one of the destined couple doesn't hope to dream of, coming to fruition. It's beyond forbidden for a God to come to love a human woman and have a life with her. It's a sweet love story, filled with egyptian mythology, to have any girl hooked to see what will happen between Sobek and Merys, because surely there has to be a way for this to end happily, doesn't there?

Despite this Bek can't be away from Merys once he'd come to hear her enchanting songs and hear her stories of her village and of her unjust life with her new stepmother and her children. Bek has never loved before, and it takes a while to realize what it is he feels for her, having lived forever he has an air of languid crocodile like patience and strength and he waits too long to truly let her know how he feels. Put once his heart knows pain there is nothing to stop the horrible power he can wield against those who have taken from him.

Merys, a young woman dedicating herself to singing and honoring the Crocodile God even though his temple is in ruins, is the descendant of the High Priestess of Sobek. She's solemn and has been through a lot with her new stepmother and her new children with her father, despite the way she's treated she hasn't lost the playfulness and her happiness when she's free of them and alone by the banks of the Nile, caring for the temple.

In all this book was very good, it had just the right amount of despair, hope, love and mythology to make the story truly entertaining. At 88 pages it's a quick read, just few hours, but time well spent! Once you start the story you don't want to set it down, I sure didn't. This is my favorite Egyptian Novella so far! Makes me want to go and read Mika Waltari's, The Egyptian again. ;)

Priestess of the Nile
By Veronica Scott

Egypt, 1500 BC

The sweet high note Merys held came to an end as she put a hand to her throat, then bent over the tiny waves. She searched along the riverbed, no longer focused on her song.

A movement to the right caught his eye. What is the name of Set’s horns is that crocodile in the shallows doing? Is it actually swimming to attack her? Enraged, Bek threw himself down the trail at a breakneck speed.

Merys stood carefully in one spot. She pushed her hair out of her eyes roughly and sighed in frustration, checking her neck one more time, not quite accepting the loss of her necklace. The slithering sensation against her skin as the old leather thong parted and the amulet fell had been so startling, she had not grabbed for it in time. Peering uselessly into the murk of the Nile, Merys blinked back tears. The only possession of bmy great-grandmother’s I had left, the symbol of my being a priestess—gone. I’ll wait for the silt to settle and then hopefully I can find it. Taking a moment to enjoy the soaring flight of a flock of white ibis against the blue sky, she stood straighter, easing her muscles. I envy them their freedom.

The sky tilted and vertigo assailed her as her feet were violently yanked out from under her. A crocodile closed its mighty jaws around her ankle, ripping a desperate scream from her throat. The bone-crushing force sent a sheet of hot pain up her leg and through her body until adrenaline pulsed in her system. The beast dragged her under the surface of the Nile, pulling her toward the center of the river. Cold water rushed over her face, into her open mouth. Merys gagged, tried to hold her breath, beating on the animal’s closed jaws with her fists, then trying to jab at the nearest eye. Her stomach heaved, nausea and weakness from the intensity of the pain in her leg spreading outward from her gut.

The crocodile rolled her over and over, tossing her like Tyema’s puppy with a rag doll. Black spots
danced before her eyes and she scrunched them tightly  closed against the dizziness. What do I do to get away before I drown? I have to breathe. My chest is going to explode. I’ve got to have air. Just as her lungs were bursting, something huge flashed by her in the water and struck the crocodile with enough force to shove it sideways a few feet against the current. The predator opened its jaws to deal with the threat and Merys floated free.

A tiny hope of survival bloomed within her. A spurt of energy sizzled through her nerves, giving her
new strength. Kicking as hard as she could with the injured leg, heart pounding, Merys clawed her way to the surface. The water in her vicinity churned bright red. Something solid rose from the murky depths. Merys screamed and flailed, too weak to swim. A hard surface lay under her, lifting her completely out of the water, supporting her as if she were stretched out on a board or a raft. Thank the gods for helping me. Nausea and dizziness overwhelmed her and the world faded from her view.

When Merys regained consciousness, she was held safe in Bek’s muscular arms, nestled against his broad chest. Too exhausted to question the miracle of his presence she curled closer to him in relief while he strode across the beach toward her favorite spot under the palm trees. Tenderly he laid her in the softest spot, then bent to examine her leg.

Blood gushed from a long series of deep, serrated slashes, staining her dress as well as his hands and kilt. The crocodile’s teeth had shredded her lower leg from ankle to knee. The bone showed through. The pain was excruciating.

Merys leaned to the side and vomited river water that burned her throat while Bek held her hair out of the way. As she wiped her mouth, exhausted, he pushed her gently to a reclining position. Chanting
something, he proceeded to run his hands over her legs. The pain spiked, then receded.
What is he doing? Some kind of healing, but how?

Green light shone from his hands, radiating from his palms in a cold, numbing rush. The light brought
blessed relief, mending her skin and bones in front of her eyes. Thank the gods.
When he finished, Bek sat on his haunches, resting his hands on his thighs, and scrutinized her. His face was lined, his eyes shadowed. He was dripping wet.

Another time I would have appreciated this view. But right now I need to understand what happened.
“You saved me? How? How could you defeat a crocodile? And what did you do to my leg?” Wriggling her toes, Merys touched her shin hesitantly with the tips of her fingers. I’m safe in his arms. Her
pulse slowed. The weakness ebbed away as she relaxed.

Bek gathered her in for a hug and she breathed deeply of his clean masculine scent. Crooning her
name over and over, he buried his face in her hair. Then he pulled back, framing her face with both of his broad hands, and met her eyes. “I thought I’d lost you.”

She put a trembling hand on his cheek. “Who are you, Bek?”

“Sobek.” He cleared his throat as he stroked her back with one hand. She realized her soaked dress
must be clinging to her as tightly as his wet tunic was plastered to his body. She leaned into the shelter of his mighty arms. Bek rested his lips next to her ear and whispered, “I am Sobek.”

New adrenaline pumped through her, making her heart pound and sending a hot pulse along her nerves. “The Crocodile God?” I’ve been sitting and talking to the Great One all this time, treating him like a human man? I fell in love with him. How could I have been so blind? So stupid?

      “The Crocodile God himself?”

“Yes.” He nodded, watching her closely, his green eyes steady on her face, his brows slightly raised. “I’m sorry I misled you.”

Veronica Scott grew up in a house with a library full of books as its heart, and when she ran out of things to read, she started writing her own stories. Married young to her high school sweetheart then widowed, Veronica has two grown daughters, one young grandson and cats.

Veronica's life has taken many twists and turns, but she always makes time to keep reading and writing. Everything is good source material for the next novel or the one after that anyway, right? She's been through earthquakes, tornadoes and near death experiences, although nothing is as stressful as meeting a book deadline. Always more stories to tell, new adventures to experience--Veronica's personal motto is, "Never boring."

Excerpt: Chapter 1

Their power gives them strength...and makes them targets.

Quinn Caldwell is the epitome of a modern goddess. Her power source is the moon, her abilities restricted only by physical resources and lunar phase. She runs a consulting business and her father's bar, serves on the board of the ancient Society for Goddess Education and Defense, and yearns for Nick Jarrett, professional goddess protector and the soul mate she can never have.

But someone has developed the rare and difficult ability to drain a goddess of her powers, and Quinn is a target. With the world thinking Nick has gone rogue ( whatever that means ) and that Quinn is influenced by "family ties" she didn't know she had, keeping themselves safe while working to find the enemy proves harder each day.

But not as hard as denying their hearts...

The plot was very interesting, when goddesses come to their powers at 21 they have a source of power be it flower water or rain or in Quinn's case the Moon. Suddenly two goddesses turn up drained of power, and her protector when the moon is new is coming to her weeks too early to protect her. Together they start to find out what happened to the goddesses even though her help is not wanted because of her family-ties, she knows they aren't talking about her adopted family so Quinn sets out to find out about her biological parents. But some things are better not known. I liked the intensity of the whole book, a lot happens and having the love triangle going on with Sam, Quinn and Nick is interesting to read.

The characters are all flawed, but then again it makes them interesting. Quinn suffers for what she's put Sam through with energy charging ( read, having sex ) and Sam torn in his love for Quinn, Nick and Quinn try their hardest not to have any feelings for each other but 15 year courtship, danger and threat but them in the path where they can't ignore what's between them any longer. Interesting characters indeed!

The only thing that bothered me a little while reading this was Quinn's "moon lust" ( read, energy charging ), I get it's how her relationship with Sam got so complicated, but it threw me off in the beginning of the book, but as the book moved forward and focus was shifted on the actual adventure things perked up considerably. I also very much enjoyed the little twist that there were only Goddesses left that all the Gods had taken themselves out of the questions!

You'll like this if... you are into urban fantasy with a paranormal romance twist, if you love love-triangles, and like your romance low burning, building, until someone just has to give in!

Niina : Welcome to Natalie J. Damschroder, author of “Under The Moon” to For The Love of Reading! and thank you for stopping by and chatting with us!

Natalie J. Damschroder : Thank you so much for having me, Niina! Your holiday layout here is gorgeous!

Niina : Thank you! Can you tell us a little about the book and five fun facts about yourself, so we can get to know you a little?

Natalie : Under the Moon is about Quinn Caldwell, a modern-day goddess determined to stop a leech from stealing power from her fellow members of the Society for Goddess Education and Defense. She's assisted by her protector, Nick Jarrett, and her assistant, Sam Remington, and along the way learns a lot about herself and the people she loves.
Hmmm, five fun facts about me... I always fail at this. They all sound boring. LOL Let's see what I can do.

1. I won a 1st place medal riding a horse named Teacher's Pet, which was poetic because that's always what I was.

2. I was a teacher's pet because I was shy and very obedient. No one believes I'm still shy, though usually adults are labeled "introverted" instead. :)

3. I worked at Sarett Nature Center in Michigan one summer, and in Under the Moon, Quinn owns a cabin along the edge of Sarett's property.

4. I'm magic. When someone's computer isn't working properly, or they can't figure something out, I go stand next to them, and before I say a word, it works or they get it. It's equally effective on electronic glitches and homework confusion.

5. I am a huge believer in Mercury Retrograde, and wish there was something we could do about it, because I'm really tired of everything being messed up four times a year.

Niina : Yeah tell me about it... What made you write about Goddesses, did something spark the idea?

Natalie : I've always liked paranormal stories with people who had special powers. I wanted to write something with that kind of heroine, but not something that had already been well done by dozens of authors ( like with vamps and shapeshifters, for example ). I was intrigued by the idea of goddesses, women who'd inherited their abilities, not been imbued with them by something radical like eclipses or radiation or aliens.

Niina : Where are you planning to take the series?

Natalie : This is such a hard question to answer without giving too much away! There are a couple of things mentioned in Under the Moon that spawned the events of Heavy Metal and Sunroper. Heavy Metal, which has already been written (though not yet revised, so some things might change), heavily features Quinn and Nick, though they aren't the main characters. Some of the unresolved situations in Under the Moon are dealt with in Heavy Metal—like what happens to the power taken by the leech. In Sunroper, Marley finally finds herself, just as she truly begins to lose herself.

Niina : Why do you write romance into a story?

Natalie : I can't NOT write romance into a story. LOL But honestly, I think love raises the stakes of anything. Yes, it's one of the driving factors of most people's lives, whether they seek it or not. But when characters' goals are life-threatening or even world-threatening, love makes it personal, and that makes us, the readers, care more.
I also love the emotions of falling in love. I'm incredibly lucky to have met my perfect match in college, and we just celebrated our 19th anniversary. So I'll never have that rush of giddy joy again—there's no substitute for new beginnings. Writing and reading romance lets me live it over and over again. :)

Niina : Well said, I agree as a married woman on that! Which character in your book became your favorite?

Natalie : I always say Nick and Sam. I can't put one over the other because I love them both equally. :) For a long time writing that first draft (which I did in 29 days during National Novel Writing Month), I wasn't sure who Quinn would end up with, I loved both guys so much. The book has changed quite a bit from that first draft, but my feelings for those guys haven't.

Niina : Now little on how you write… How do you write, chapter here and there or follow from beginning to an end?

Natalie : I'm definitely a linear writer, starting at the beginning and writing straight through. That doesn't mean I don't jot down ideas ( I keep a spreadsheet AND an ideas document for every book ), and once I wrote the final chapter when I was only about 2/3 of the way through the book. But I don't plan a lot in advance, so that makes it harder to hop around.

Niina : What chapter did you most enjoyed writing and why?

Natalie : The chapters changed on every revision. But the scene I most loved writing was the first one in the cabin, when Quinn, Nick, and Sam arrive battered and weary, and Nick doctors Quinn's injuries. I was really proud of the emotions and sensuality in the scene, and can only hope they come through to the reader the way they play out in my head.

Niina : What's the best part about being an author? And what’s the worst?

Natalie : The worst part is rejection, whether that's a publisher saying no thank you, a reader wanting their money back, or a reviewer trashing everything you love about a story. There are a lot of best parts, though. At the top are the moments when everything is flowing fast and furiously and you just KNOW you nailed the scene. Having readers and reviewers love the same thing you loved about the book is right up there, too. And just being able to make some kind of career out of something you're passionate about is fantastic.

Niina : What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

Natalie : I don't think I really have any. I'm pretty mundane. I guess the closest thing to a quirk is getting ideas or solutions in the shower, and doing the mad dash through the house to write them down before I lose them. But I know I'm not alone in that one. :)

Niina : How many jobs did you have before you became a writer? What was your first job?

Natalie : I think I had 8 jobs before I became a writer. My very first non-babysitting job was working the counter at a dry cleaner/laundromat my senior year of high school. In college I demonstrated pizza  ( handed out samples ) in a grocery store for a while, and sold shoes the rest of my college career. My favorite job was an internship at National Geographic Society. No, wait, favorite was working in a concession stand on the beach! Yeah, that was a good one.

Niina : Now for its time for some fun! I you could only read 5 romance books for the rest of your life what would they be, and why?

Natalie : Oh, lord, only 5?! Why are you so cruel?! LOL

1. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Most wouldn't call it a romance, but Harry falling for Ginny, something I'd seen coming since he first boarded the train at platform 9 3/4 in the first book, is something I can and do read over and over.

2. The Suzanne Brockmann book where Jules and Robin finally get together. I can't remember which of her Troubleshooters books that is, but I loved it!

3. Collide by Megan Hart, her most recent Spice book, because the heroine is amazing, and the relationship is so untraditional, and I love untraditional.

4. Knight in Shining Armor by Jude Devereux, because it was the first time I remember reading a romance where the heroine didn't wind up with her hero, but had a happy ending anyway.

5. Blue Silver, a collection of short stories I was part of with Megan Hart, Ellie Marvel, Jacki King, and Penny Dawn, because I love the band members so much, especially Seth and Julian, and every so often I need to be back in their world.

Niina : Your current Top 5 dangerous bad boys in literature? (and why?)

Natalie : Wow, this one's even harder. Bad boys aren't really my thing, though the term has slightly different definition for different people. Roarke is on the list, definitely, from JD Robb's series, because he'll do so much for Eve, including not be bad. I'll add Ranger from the Stephanie Plum books because he's mysterious and hot and intense and I love intense guys. Ooh, Reyes from Darynda Jones' reaper series. He's the son of Satan! Also intense and mysterious. Tod from Rachel Vincent's Soul Screamers, though that might be cheating because he's so very good. And then Kale from Jus Accardo's Denazen because it was never his fault that he was bad.

Niina : Oh yes, Roarke. ;) If your book were made into a movie who would you cast as the leads?

Natalie : Finally, an easy question! LOL Quinn is the trickiest, because I can't really think of an actress who's the right age and attitude. Emma Stone would be great if she were 10 years older. Sam would have to be played by Jared Padalecki, and Nick by Jensen Ackles.

Niina : Good choice for the boys! Now, who is currently your “book boyfriend”?

Natalie : Morrison in CE Murphy's Walker Papers! :)

Niina : Now, can you tell us five fun/quirky things about Nick, that we didn't learn from the book?

Natalie : 1. Nick would totally ride a motorcycle if it were practical, which it's not because he has too much gear he has to transport. (That's why it's okay that he's on a motorcycle on the cover but never rides one in the book. LOL)
2. Nick loves sushi, but he'd never admit it to anyone in a million years. Especially Sam.

3. Every Christmas, if he's not working, Nick secretly drops food, toys, and other stuff at the homes of needy kids and adults he's come across while traveling.

4. Nick is totally addicted to talk radio. He'll argue with the talk show host for hundreds of miles.

5. Though Nick is currently the only member of his family to carry on the protector legacy, he's grooming a few of his nieces and nephews to take over when they grow up.

Niina : If we could ask Nick and Quinn what has been the single most outrageous night out for them, what would they answer?

Natalie : Nick just snorts at the question and Quinn looks wryly sad, because nothing has ever been "normal" for them. They've never had a night out, never mind an outrageous one, unless you count their night on the run in Boston.

Niina : Now before we sign off and finish up here are some Quick Fire Questions:

Cats or dogs? I used to think both, but learned it's definitely cats.
Coffee or tea? Mostly tea (regular black tea with cream and sugar), but I love a mocha with whipped cream
Dark chocolate or milk chocolate? Dark, definitely! Preferably with nuts or toffee in it.
Rocks or flowers? I love flowers, but rocks are definitely more suited for me. LOL
Night or day? Night! I'm a big night owl. I hate to go to bed, and I hate to get up in the morning.
UF (Urban Fantasy) or PNR (Paranormal Romance)? Both, as long as the UF has romance in it. I like how UF can explore things in further depth over time or even feature dueling heroes, but PNR is satisfying in the short term.
Bad boys or good cops? Good cops pretending to be bad boys.
Brunettes or Blonds? Totally irrelevant. :)
Vampires or werewolves? Neither.
Romance or erotica? Romance. I write graphic sex and have nothing against it, but it has to be tightly intertwined with the love story.
Mystery or Thriller? I lean slightly toward mystery, being more cerebral and not really liking to be too scared.
Men:  Alpha-male or submissive? If those are my only choices, alpha male, but I prefer a guy who's more complex than that.
Beer or Wine? Hard alcohol in a mixed drink!
Pizza or Restaurant? Depends on the circumstances. Pizza delivered after a long day, restaurant when we're out and about.
Cake or Donuts? Donuts!
TV or DVD? TV wins for the amount of time I spend watching, but I do like DVDs, too.
Movies: Romantic comedies or Action/Adventure? Again, both! But only well-done ones.
Halloween or Midsummer? Halloween. October is my favorite month!
Times New Roman or Courier? TNR, but I like Garamond even better
Crayons or markers? Crayons. They allow for more nuance in shading.
Pens or pencils? Pens, though pencils are important at certain times.
Books or e-books? I like both equally, but read more on my Kindle now because of the convenience.
Kids or pets? Other people's? Not too big on either. Mine? The kids are much better behaved than the pets.

Niina : Thanks for visiting the For The Love of Reading, Natalie, it was fun to have you come by!

Natalie : Thank YOU, Niina, for making me work so hard in this excellent interview! I loved it!

Natalie J. Damschroder came to writing the hard way - by avoiding it. Though she wrote her first book at age six (My Very Own Reading Book) and received accolades for her academic writing (Ruth Davies Award for Excellence in Writing for a paper on deforestation her senior year in college), she hated doing it. Colonial food and the habits of the European Starling just weren’t her thing.

She found her niche - romantic fiction - shortly after college graduation. After an internship with the National Geographic Society, customer service for a phone company just wasn’t that exciting. So she began learning how to write the books she’d loved to read all her life. Now she struggles to balance her frenetic writing life with her family, the most supportive husband in the world and two beautiful, intelligent, stubborn, independent daughters (the oldest of whom has become a writer). She somehow also fits in a day job and various volunteer positions in and out of the writing industry.
