Evangeline Grey has no desire to marry. She's been burned before and her beautiful sister chosen before her. Plain looking but thoroughly out spoken and well guarded nothing can shake her, well except perhaps her father's ultimatum she needs to marry soon or he'll choose a man for her.
Thomas Masterson is a rake, with no desire to becoming a serious state owner even though her brother and father have a died and now his uncle has stated that if he doesn't marry and produce and heir soon he's going to loose the land.
Two ultimatums bring together too completely different people who seem to have nothing in common in the beginning, when below the surface prim and proper Evangeline has passion perhaps too much of it and Thomas begins to fall in love with the mysterious and cool Ms. Grey. Before Evangeline knows what has happened she's been compromised by Mr. Masterson and will have to marry soon. Not that it matters too much with her father's ultimatum but something about Thomas' heated looks and flirting has her ill at ease like she's never experienced before.
I absolutely, positively loved this book from the beginning to the end! Nadja Notariani writes as amazing as Lisa Kleypas does and I'm completely hooked on historical romances again. A Practical Arrangement was perfectly proper in all the details, the language and the romance. The story was well built with everything one hopes for to keep the attention on the entertaining chemistry between prim and reserved Ms. Grey and rakish flirt Mr. Masterson. Absolutely entertaining!
Evangeline was no doubt my favorite historical romance heroine of 2012! She was so withdrawn but had a world of feelings and restrictions going on on the inside. She hated physical intimacy like embraces because of her mother's treatment of her as a child, she found them suffocating except when performed by Thomas which left her mystified. This was just one of her endearing quirks that made her utterly charming and sweet. Not to mention of her thread of any sort of sexual contact, which was hard on our poor rake and his shot down attempts of flirting with our Ms. Grey.
Thomas I loved from the beginning, he tried his hardest to woo Evangeline but all he got back was smart retorts and brush offs, which baffled him enough that when he didn't receive them from ditsy society girls he became hooked on her. And that was just so romantic, and if I wasn't hooked on this book by then I was now! Thomas was known for his expertise in the bedroom and as Ms. Grey couldn't care less of that he had to win her by showing his true self and that's when he begun to make progress even through greatly resisted some. I absolutely loved Thomas! After all who doesn't love a cured rake. ;)
The romance was perfect, miss match couple, marrying ultimatums, a jealous ex-lover of Thomas' and Evangeline's quirks and fear of intimacy and Thomas' love of it made this story so intriguing! I simply hated putting this book down to go explore Prague and that's saying something. ;) So if you want romance, real Romance then this is for you! And definitely for me!
Must read more by Ms. Notariani!
