Got to love a good historical romance, and The Wagonmaster was just that! An interesting mix of historically accurate and sexy, Josh and Addie completely carry this romance with interesting, authentic character traits and chemistry that smolders - and even the parts that aren't full blown romance are intriguing and entertaining which is always the mark of a good book for me. ;)

Okay just look at that cover! How can anyone say no to that? I sure didn't. ;) I have a soft spot for western romance and historical romance and the marriage of two. So Taming Talia seemed like a great fit for me. The story was simple but it had a lot going on through out the book, the seduction, the intrigue, the storm, the danger... nothing was missing! Where this novel was great in having everything, there was something missing for me, I can't quite but my finger on it.

This story was pretty much just about Natalie and Jared stuck together in a storm of all storms and that created all kinds of nice friction and tension between the two. Natalie's firecracker personality and Jared's cool calculative surface were a great match - and more than once I found myself telling Jared to stop being so collected and see he was falling for her.

The romance was hot, no doubt about it, these two thoroughly enjoyed their spouts in bed and their bickering between bed times - this was entertaining for me as well as I like a bit of battle of wits in my romances. There was plenty of sexual tension and stolen glances and 1889 proper behavior covers cracking which made this romance a very passionate one even outside the bedroom.

Niina : Let’s get started! Can you tell my readers here 4 fun unknown facts about you so we can break the ice?

Marie-Nicole :  That's assuming I can think of any fun facts. Hmm.
1. I used to be addicted to a USA cable TV show called La Femme Nikita
2.  I used to write LFN fan fiction, and it's still out there for all the world to see...if one knew where to look.
3.  I'm addicted to Netflix and British TV shows, especially the mysteries and period dramas.
4.  My first hero was a cowboy, Roy Rogers!

Niina : Tell us little about your book Taming Talia, what’s it about?

Marie-Nicole : It's about a sex-starved widow, Talia, and Jared, a saddle-hardened Pinkerton agent who was hired by her late husband's family to prove she had him murdered. It's set in 1889 in the NE New Mexico Territory, and they're marooned together by the blizzard of 1889 (real event).

Niina : How do you write, chapter here and there or follow from beginning to an end?

Marie-Nicole :  Most of the time I write from beginning to end, but if a future scene idea hits me, I'll write it and hold on to it until it works into the story. I used to do that kind of thing more often, but less now.

Niina : Yep, can't let ideas escape. ;) What chapter did you most enjoye writing and why?

Marie-Nicole : I always love writing the first chapter and the last of each book. The first because it's exciting to start a new book, and the last because my characters get their HEA. For Taming Talia, one of my favorite chapters was their first love scene. Why? Because Talia, the heroine, had escaped an icy cold death and woke up naked in the arms of the hero Jared. Who wouldn't want to wake up like that?

Niina : Who wouldn't indeed! How did the cover come about and what is your opinion of it?

Marie-Nicole : First of all, I love it. Samhain Publishing has a wonderful staff of cover artists, and I asked for the same artist who did the cover for Seducing the Sheriff, the first book in the Loving the Lawman series, so that the series would have a look of continuity. And I love the dead sexy cowboy on the cover. Yum!

Niina : Me too! ;) So, why did you pick sexy historical western genre?

Marie-Nicole : I would have to say that HBO's Deadwood series had a lot to do with that choice. I loved the grittiness and earthiness of the series. I couldn't hope to duplicate the superb writing, but I certainly had fun with those characters. I also write spicy contemporary romantic suspense, but my editor wanted something that would fit more into the "red hots" category.

Niina : Can you tell us five fun/quirky things about  the hero  that we didn't learn from the book?

Marie-Nicole : Difficult question, Niina. *scratching my head* Most of what I learned about Jared I learned while writing his story. I don't always do a very detailed backstory. I like bits and pieces of it to come to me as I write.
I will tell you that he was a secondary character in Seducing the Sheriff, and I found him so compelling that he almost took over the story. Some of his fun scenes parts never saw print because my critique partner said I either had to make him the hero, take him, out or make it a menage a trois. Being stubborn, I downplayed Jared's interaction with the heroine of that story and allowed Cordero, the real hero, to remain the hero, because he deserved it, but I just couldn't take Jared out entirely because I was already in love with him. LOL Needless to say, Jared deserved his own story, thus, Taming Talia, and a HEA as well.

Niina :  Now to more personal questions! What’s the sexiest article of clothing on a guy?

Marie-Nicole : Low riding jeans or a tux. I like a man who can get his hands dirty, but cleans up well.

Niina : What’s the biggest turn on in a guy, fictional or real life?

Marie-Nicole : First of all, he has to be breathing. After that, nice eyes, a wide smile, and a sense of humor. He must love dogs.

Niina : Who is your current book boyfriend?

Marie-Nicole : US Marshal Sam Dunaway. His wife ran off with his life savings, then died in a hotel fire. Or did she?

Niina : LOL! Would you rather meet real vampires or werewolves?

Marie-Nicole : Neither! However, if I have to choose, I would rather meet a werewolf of the Alcide Herveaux variety. If I had to pick one vampire it would be Mick St. John from Moonlight. CBS was so stupid to cancel that show.

Niina : Agreed! What is your favorite guilty pleasure?

Marie-Nicole :  General Hospital. I'm a longtime ABC soaps fan, but since they discontinued All My Children and One Live to Live, I refuse to get hooked on any remaining shows. Once GH is gone, that's it for me.

Maiden Behind The Mask was bit of a slow starter, but when it got going it was great. Romance genre has been in the need of a spicy female-Zorro story for sure! Chevrestt has written a well rounded novella with a sassy strong lead and a gorgeous man to back her up - and not forgetting few kicks and giggles.

Catalina was fun to read, she had the headstrong heroine down to a T, in a time when women didn't have the luxury of being powerful on their own terms. Ricardo Garcia was a nice balance to her, a hot guy with a strong head and a cute butt and one big jealous streak - he was a compliment to Catalina, she needed someone who was charming, sexy and just as strong willed as her.

The romance was almost to the sweet end but not quite, we had the action, the adventure and sword play in the main role, but there was a nice amount of sexual tension to keep Catalina and Garcia on their toes so to speak. A chance encounter forced them to marry, both believing it was going to be loveless marriage but it's a miracle what few weeks in bed does to suspicions like that. ;)

           Selena's hand shook, but the pesos were transferred to the dirty palm. The man laughed with glee, the crowd dispersed, and Catalina was left with a dirty, starving horse.
           "We'll get you fed and cleaned up," she promised the horse, patting its neck. A cloud of dirt rose in the air, and Catalina struggled not to cough. "I shall call you La Reina, because once in my establo, I shall treat you like a queen. Your body may be beaten, but your spirit is not broke."
           "Catalina?" Her maid's voice tentative as it interrupted her quiet chattering. "Whatever possessed you--"
           "Fetch me a mozo," Catalina interrupted her. "Take the remaining pesos and fetch me a groom. La Reina is going to her castle." She wasn't offering more explanations than that. She didn't owe anyone an explanation. She'd done what was right.
           As her maid turned to comply, heading toward the livery, a loud pffffht rendered the air. Catalina stared at the mare in surprise, aghast.
           Selena froze and swung around to admonish her charge. "Senorita! Your behavior has been questionable enough this day. Mind yourself." She shook her head and her finger both before turning back the task at hand.
           Catalina heard her muttering as she sashayed away. She was too surprised and too tired to defend herself, but the breeze picked up, and a waft of foul air assaulted her. Catalina immediately tugged a delicate, lace handkerchief from her sleeve and placed it over her nose as she glared at the horse.

REVIEW - HEART OF MINE

Laura agrees to her controlling swindling father's plan to trick Jake in to marriage by letting him think he'd compromised her. Laura who's been in love with Jake since her teenage years sees this as better option than having her dad marry her to a old miner thrice her age.

But getting Jake to see that she isn't like her father isn't easy, if at all possible. But she's determined she'll show him that she's kind, caring and nothing at all like her father.

Jake's sure he's been plotted to marry Laura, and he's sure as hell he won't fall for her good girl act, she's out for his money and see won't see one red dime of it - but when the gold digger resumes her work in town Jake's having to face the fact that there actually might be more to Laura than he first thought.

I haven't yet read a novella that got me to tear up, but Heart of Mine did - twice! The story is a beautiful, well plotted historical western romance with  romance, emotional entanglements and one decrepit evil father trying to fulfill his plot with no regard for his daughter.

The character both were very realistic and 3 dimensional, Laura was so caring and good that against her father she really shined as the good girl, her love for Jake and how she but him first was truly emotional and really got me shedding tears. Jake was tough, very cool and collected until he begin to have feeling for his wife, who he wanted to despise. And of course tall, blond and built in a white cowboy hat wasn't a fault either. ;)

The romance was beautiful, it moved slowly but in very good speed for a novella. It was near sweet in the beginning but moved to full blow romance in the middle as it was a perfect fit for the story. I was nervous of them finally going to bed together because the plot was from the beginning that Jake took her virginity and thus had to marry her, but as it really didn't happen what Jake would do when he figured that out she was a virgin the "second time around" was so nerve-wracking!

A great story! Michelle Beattie did good in writing an engaging novella with depth, threat, emotion and romance!

Amazing novel! Perfect balance of riding bulls, attraction and naughty hotel room nights! This novel gives you a hot bull rider with a sexy controlling Dom side, Connor's a certified card carrying member of the male gender, hot as hell, bossy and protective and a true alpha male. He wants to take care of his woman, truly take care of her physically, emotionally and, yup, in the bedroom too - a winning combination! I'd read this book alone just to get to know Connor!

Jessica was no push over, and loved her for it, she was the kinda girl who decided to make things happen on her own and didn't take no crap for it - but then when it got to her bedroom manners she was the opposite, wanting to let go of control and give it Connor. I liked Jessica a lot, she was no ditz, but a cowgirl through and through, and watching her fall for Connor was so exciting.

The BDMS side of this story was mild, and I loved it - I think a little spanking and domination gives the story some of that extra sizzle for the bedroom scenes, but there are lines I don't like seen crossed and this novel didn't. If you've never read BDSM spiced story before then this book won't scare you. Best one I've read so far!

I really enjoyed the plot, I liked the love story woven into the story of domination and submission, bull riding and personal feelings going haywire. I think above all this was a love story first, just the couple in this romance was into bit of playing in the bedroom. I liked how there were obstacles and threat - and I loved how those spiked Connor's possessiveness, and made him realize what his feeling for Jessica were.

I loved the Cover, cocky, naughty and very much a promise of the story to come! Great choice! I love the cocky grin and the leather duster! This novel was great, so worth buying! You won't regret getting this, it's very hard to put down until you are finished!

Niina : Let’s get started! Can you tell my readers here 4 fun unknown facts about you so we can break the ice?

Cassandra : Oh wow. Let me think...

1 - From ages 8-13 I rode horses competitively. Then I got dumb and became a teenager and stopped. The people I was routinely beating went on to national competitions, the Olympics, etc.

2 - I have an MBA and have taught college courses in both human resources and marketing.

3 - I worked for a company that spent over a million dollars in one week alone to attend a trade show. I was hired 7 weeks before the show and not allowed to speak with the person formerly in the position because she was suing the company. It was later proven (partially through evidence I uncovered) that she was secretly married to the foreman of the trade show company that assembled and disassembled their booths and they were grossly overcharging the company and then skimming the profits. But even without this, yes, the company spent a million dollars and I had seven weeks to put the whole thing together.

4 - I'm a cancer survivor and was on a bike-a-thon committee for 11 years. During that time the bike-a-thon went from raising $110,000 to over $2 million (not just due to me, but pretty cool nonetheless)

Niina : That's impressive! Tell us little about your novel Impact, what’s it about?

Cassandra : Conner! And, of course, Jessica. Conner is a professional bull rider and a closet Dom. He doesn't want anyone on the bull riding tour to know he's a Dom because the tour tends to run pretty conservative. But then he meets Jessica, who works for the tour, and senses that she's a natural submissive. When she asks him to train her as a submissive, he can't say no. Of course, this all leads to them falling in love. :-)

Niina : Tell us something about your book that we wouldn’t know just by reading the blurb?

Cassandra :  There's an evil force against Conner and Jessica that's not mentioned in the blurb at all. *cue creepy music*

Niina : I was excited to discover that, worked so well into the story! Now, what chapter did you most enjoyed writing and why?

Cassandra : I love all the BDSM stuff, so the first time Jessica submits to Conner was pretty fun to write! I can't remember which chapter that was...

Niina : I loved watching Connor freak out about her being such a natural. ;) What are three words that would describe your hero the best?

Cassandra : Tall, dark, and Dom.

Niina : That would do it. :D What’s the best compliment you’ve received on your writing? And who complimented you?

Cassandra : Oh gosh, I've received a lot of great reviews, but I'd have to say that when my BDSM holiday novella ( yes, you can marry BDSM with the holidays ) Caught won Best BDSM Book 2011 by LoveRomancesCafe it was a huge shock and a great honor.

Niina : Now to more personal questions!  What’s the sexiest article of clothing on a guy?

Niina : What’s the biggest turn on in a guy, fictional or real life?

Cassandra : Pertaining to his body, the abs. I'm a total sucker for a six-pack. Pertaining to his mind, personality...probably how focused he is on me. You don't like to think you're the number four priority item for your man, you know?

Niina : Oh so very true... What is your favorite guilty treat?

Cassandra : Pepsi. I'm an addict.

Niina : What does it take to write a really hot love scene?

Cassandra : I don't listen to music when I write. For me it's too distracting. I love my music and I want to bop around and sing along, neither of which helps my productivity. All I really need to get in the mood to write a steamy scene is a block of free time. I know many authors say love/sex scenes are really difficult for them to write. I don't find them particularly difficult, but to write the really hot ones like I do does take a certain level of comfort with sexuality. ;-)

Niina : Can you share with us the 3 closest book to you?

Cassandra : My bookshelves are right next to my desk and I can reach out and touch probably a hundred books. There's also a copy of the Romance Writer's Report, which is the magazine Romance Writers of America puts out monthly, sitting on an end table well within reach.

Excerpt: The 1st, 2nd and 3rd Chapter

“Being a veterinarian in the late 1800’s is difficult enough, but for Jillian Matthews it’s impossible. Not allowed in the vet schools, she trained at her father’s side until she had the skills needed to move west. Jillian accepts an advertisement for a position in Montana, using only her initials which happen to be same as her father’s. Convinced that in the untamed west, her skills will be valued and appreciated, regardless of her gender, she’s quickly proved wrong.

Wade Parker is sure the pretty redhead claiming to be the vet he sent for is one of his ranch hands’ practical jokes but the fiery woman very quickly puts him in his place and proves him wrong. His impression, however, turns south when the animal she operated on later dies. With a ranch on the verge of bankruptcy, losing an animal was the last thing he could afford and he can’t help thinking the old vet, the male doctor, wouldn’t have let his animal die.

With Wade’s initial reaction guiding them, the town is quick to want Jillian out. But the more Wade gets to know Jillian, the more he sees her grit and compassion, the harder he falls for her. When Wade realizes he was too hasty in his judgment and urges the town to give Jillian another chance, he makes more than few enemies. Enemies that would do almost anything to get her out, and to make sure Wade doesn’t take her side again.

Soon threats turn to violence and both Wade and Jillian must make a stand. The problem is, at what cost?”

The characters: Jillian wants to change the world she lives in, she wants to be able to do what she sees as her calling. The times aren’t quite right for it, but the resistance she faces doesn’t really get to her, she know she's good at what she does. Jillian pigheadedly pushes forward until things finally begin to give.

Wade is a widower, a father of a small girl and the way he’s been burned he doesn’t want a relationship, but he can’t get Jillian of his mind. Wade’s stubborn, at times even rude, but warms up towards the end. Watching his internal struggle is sometimes even amusing, he wants Jillian but does everything stop himself.

I would have hoped a little more softness from them, but with their backgrounds it makes sense that things needed to build up.

The plot: Tricking people of the small town in Montana to hire her as a vet, under the assumption that she’s a man, ends up biting her in the butt. Townsfolk refuse to accept her and use her services.

It’s true that circumstances like these actually convinced men that women could do the jobs as well, when there weren’t men around to do them. This book has a "Dr. Quinn: Medicine Woman" feel to it, if you liked the show you’ll enjoy this book as well!

The writing: The writing is very calm and nicely drawling, it’s not fast paced, but has a nice bit of action in it to keep the reader reading, Another Chance is more a character driven hardships and trials type of story. There was one thing that prevented me from going with the flow of the story, the text was at time underlined which broke my concentration from the mood of the story - but this is fixed for the Kindle Edition on Amazon, so you needn't worry about it.

Another Chance gives you a western, with a woman needing to prove she can belong, and a man who needs closure on his wife’s death to move on and realize it’s not so bad to fall in love again - and enough townsfolk and one with a bad enough grudge to cause some major trouble.

Pirates and Cowboys-They're More Alike Than You Think

I've published three pirate novels so far (with the plan to finish the series to total five books) and now I've published a historical western.  At first, this might seem strange.  There's quite a stretch between seventeenth century pirates and nineteenth century cowboys.  Or is there?

Sure, most cowboys in the "wild west" had likely never seen an ocean, never mind lived most of their lives on one, but it goes deeper than that.  And after being asked, "why pirates?" and "why cowboys?" I decided to examine my love of these two a little closer and what I found explained why they are both so special to me.

1. They made a living despite the risks, the odds, and the elements. Let's face it; neither life could have been easy. Plowing fields by oxen or horse, homesteading a property from nothing and doing it without cranes, bulldozers and tractors. Living with thirty or so men on one ship, day in and day out.  Getting shot at, being hunted. It wasn't easy. Books and movies make it seem romantic, but what they did just to survive took guts. Lots of it. I admire that.
2. Despite their sometimes savage-like behavior, pirates lived by a code (the articles they signed when they joined a vessel).  Maybe it only made sense to them, but there was honor and trust. In order to be successful they had to work together.  So like a rancher with his hands and his family. They honor each other, respect each other's contribution and reciprocate that with loyalty. They know that alone they can't make it work, it takes them all.  And if you help me, I'll help you. A shame that way of thinking is eroding. We're all so busy now that it's hard to drum up the time, sometimes, to help others. And yet we should.
3. They're timeless. Cowboys and pirates have been around for centuries, capturing the imagination of everyone, young and old. Most child imaginable has played Cowboys and Indians, played pirate like Captain Hook in Peter Pan. Maybe we wouldn't want to live their lives completely, but how many of us wouldn't give a day or two to live as one?  I know I would!
4. They know what they want and they go after it. They don't let anything stand in their way and they continue to work at it until they've achieved it. How sexy is that? 
5. And lastly, they're sexy. Oh, come on, you know it's true. At least in our imagination (and thanks to Johnny Depp!) The shirts billowing in the wind? The hats? The swagger? The way they have with the ladies? Romanticized or not it works for me!

Clark : I’d say probably werewolves, but only because I like to play the odds. There’s very little chance of surviving a meeting with the Vampire in Red Winter, Jericho Whistler, or the Vampires in The Cowboy and the Vampire, unless you are very tough, resourceful and handy with a gun like Sheriff Early Hardiman. With a werewolf, I might at least have a fighting chance; plus I’ve always been pretty good with dogs.❞

❝The devil got in her way again. Lucy had to see Ambrose before she left on her first investigation since he was between her and her horse. When she entered the barn, he straightened from his half-crouch over the feed sack he was wrestling and pushed his hat off his forehead, waiting for her to declare her purpose.

Avoiding his gaze, she announced to the air above his shoulder, “I’m going to town.”

He was sweating, covered with straw chaff and he didn’t look happy at the interruption. They had maintained an uneasy truce since the night she’d cleaned his office and laid him flat with her knee. She’d like to believe Ambrose had learned respect but it was more probable he was plotting another siege.

Alex jumped from the hayloft and dusted himself off. “Water…” He nodded toward the house and skirted them both, clearly unwilling to witness the imminent explosion.

Ambrose said to Alex, “Take a break.” To Lucy he said, “You aren’t going anywhere.” He pronounced judgment as though he was the Almighty.

Anger whooshed through her like fire through dry leaves.

She stepped around him, heading for Sheba’s stall. “I came to Eclipse to find answers, not dally with my former husband,” she told him.

“Former husband, my ass,” he snarled. Charging her, he hooked his arm around her middle, carrying her into the tack room.

Rage blistered the air—both his and hers.  For more than two weeks, they’d been circling each other like street brawlers, each looking for an opening.

In the dim light, Lucy wasn’t nearly as confident of her rights as she had been a moment before in the daylight. Ambrose surrounded her, backing her against the wall, blanketing her body with his. Quincy. The name floated through her mind as his mouth claimed hers, stifling any response other than surrender.

Releasing her lips, he growled at her like a crazed animal, “You’ll stay put, here, and go nowhere without me or mine.” His hands cupped her breasts as if he could make her obey by squeezing them.

But it wasn’t painful. Even as she mustered outrage, Lucy’s body melted under the convulsive stroking and kneading of his hands. He stood too close, and when she tried to push him away he crowded closer.

She should have been in a panic. Instead, desire coursed through her, dampening her feminine curls with wet heat. She fought the mesmerizing force of her own needs as he lifted her onto the flat surface of the saddle bench, pinning her arms to her sides, punctuating his orders with physical demonstrations of his power over her.

“You’re not leaving today, tomorrow, or the next fifty years without my say-so.” His words, little more than grunts, were interspersed between kisses delivered to her neck and mouth while his hands caressed and aroused her breasts.

His lips left a hot trail, making her shudder. When he captured her face between his big hands, holding her still for his plundering kisses, she repeated weakly, “Mr. Quince, I’m going to town. Get off me.”

“Like hell,” he growled.

She let him claim her mouth, thoroughly tasting his invasive tongue. When she retreated, nibbling on his lower lip as if it was something she’d done a hundred times before, he released her arms to cup her face in his hands. “Lucy… God, sweetheart, I’ve missed you.”

Lucy’s first line of defense, a reticule carrying her gun, lay useless on the barn floor. Giddy though she was, she inched her hand down to her thigh and lifted her skirt to access the blade she’d strapped there.

“Mr. Quince.” She tried to be polite, but her breathing was labored, and emotions she chose to label as anger bit into her as sharp as the knife she placed at his throat.
She couldn’t guess whether it was her manners or the blade getting his attention, but he stilled.

“I’m going to town. Get off me.”

He stared at her—frozen. And then his passion turned to fury and he dared her to kill him. Pressing his neck against her weapon, he marked himself, a line of red appearing on his skin, reinforcing his challenge. “Go ahead, cut my throat. I don’t think you’ve got the nerve.”

At the same time he held her gaze, he shoved his hand inside her drawers, stroking her belly and then trailing lower, riffling her nest of curls. Outraged, she lowered the knife and pushed at his shoulder, but he shrugged her off as his fingers teased the lips of her sex, running up and down the rim of her cleft before delving deeper to brush across her pearl.

The throbbing pleasure in her womb turned Lucy’s brain to mush and her traitorous thighs eased open, admitting her arousal. She breathed in the musky scent of his sweat and dropped the knife, arching into his touch.

“You’re hot for it,” the devil crowed, breaking the spell as he stared at her smugly. 

“Mr. Quince, you’re wrong.” Holding his gaze, she fumbled the tin feed scoop into her hand and slammed him in the head.

Stunned, he stumbled back and watched as she picked up her useless knife to sheathe it in the leather casing she wore wrapped around her thigh.

“Mrs. Quince, when it comes to my wife, I’m never wrong.” He emphasized the word, reinforcing his claim evidently unwilling to let the last round be called hers.❞

But her curves made them more attractive than Miss Pontfour’s dancing girls in their silks and feathers.

“Ma’am.” Kid doffed his Stetson and tucked it against his buckskin shirt.

“She’s not a ma’am.” Sam growled, irritated at the lascivious direction of his brother’s gaze and the fact that he shared the sentiment. “Roust some of the boys together and follow the horses. Wake Mr. Reynolds up. We’ll need to know how much is missing.❞

A sexy western where the rules of physic don’t apply!

Set in the old west where men are men and women are in a less favorable position comes a romance with a paranormal twist, werewolves, fire starters, psychics and cowboys how can you ask for more? Well you don’t, because this books great!

You easily slip into the roll of the story, and find it hard to stop reading, especially when things spice up with Scarlett and Sam. With thread approaching Horado in the aftermath of Scarlett's capture it’s up to the Kane family to protect it, and the Kane brothers are nothing if not honorable.

I loved Sam, loved his struggle to set his emotions about Scarlett right, he tries so hard to be rude and indifferent but his walls keep cracking showing he wants so much more from her. Scarlett is a great heroine, strong willed during the time of timid women, and not to mention powerful if she could control her power. The Kane brothers were such a pleasure to read, they are though, playful in the hot brotherly way.

I truly liked this story, it had that western feel to it with sexy cowboys and one hot marshal and great supporting cast of brothers on both sides of the couple! This is definitely one of my favorite western romances I’ve read in ages!

If you like your men little rough around the edges, honest and handsome - with handsome brothers! -  and your stories with a paranormal twist then this book is for you! Don’t miss these men of the old west!

Hardiman is a great character, he’s rough and rugged, has a sweet spot for his wife and good head on his shoulders, which makes seeing the world through his eyes a pleasure.

Red Winter is written in a way that makes you feel like you know the town already, which lets you slip into the story so easily, which makes the eeriness of the story really sink in good!

You’ll love this if you like thrills, chills, and the “oh don’t do that!” I skipped off my normal romance genre trail, but this novella was well worth it! After all my second love is westerns, so I’m pleased. ;)

Niina : Welcome to For The Love of Reading, Clark. Glad to have you come by!

Clark Hays : Thanks Niina, it’s a pleasure to be here along with so many great paranormal author interviews and reviews.

Niina : Can you tell us why you decided to write Red Winter and what is its connection to “The Cowboy and the Vampire?”

Clark : Writing about cowboys and Vampires, two enduring archetypes, creates a natural and immediate tension between good and evil and is a fun way to explore some big issues like what it means to be human and how (or if … ) true love is enough to overcome even truly horrific challenges. When I co-wrote The Cowboy and the Vampire with my lovely writing partner (and spouse) Kathleen McFall, we took full advantage of that tension, and then used humor, action and an “opposites attract” romance to turn the Vampire myth on its’ pointy ear and offer some insights into what life is like in the modern West (Hint: it’s not very glamorous).

In Red Winter, my novella, I moved the Vampire world we created back to the Old West for a more serious look at love, life and survival at a time when life was particularly hard. I think that’s why the world remains fascinated with cowboys — there was a brief period when just surviving was a challenge, people made choices to risk it all and carve out a new life on the frontier and self-sufficiency was a virtue. Even though it didn’t last that long, it really shaped what it means to be American.

I grew up on a cattle ranch in Montana and I’ve always loved the myths, legends and stories about the American West — and experienced them firsthand. It’s pretty easy to channel the cattle drives, lonesome campfires and gunfights when you grow up on 2,000 acres of sagebrush grasslands dotted with abandoned buildings and gold mines from a hundred years earlier and you could find arrowheads under prickly pear cactus around deserted sod houses. Red Winter gave me free rein to dig deep into those experiences.
Sheriff Early Hardman, the hero of Red Winter, is a tough, laconic gunfighter that would stack up well against any of the familiar names from that era like Wyatt Earp or Wild Bill Hickock. Only Early has a (relatively) soft side. He’s deeply in love with his new wife Miss Grace, the former madam of the infamous and now defunct Pearl — a destination brothel. They are looking forward to a quiet life in the little town of LonePine (it’s still little 100 years later in The Cowboy and the Vampire) as the West changes around them and the modern age creeps along. Then a Vampire shows up. With winter closing in like a noose, they could all be dead by spring if Sheriff Hardiman can’t figure out how to kill someone who won’t die.

Niina : What part did you most enjoyed writing and why?
Clark : I grew up doing a lot of shooting and even though I don’t get a chance to do that much anymore, I’m still kind of a gun geek. I enjoyed writing about the period guns used by the main characters. Sheriff Hardiman favors a pair of matched Schofield revolvers, a somewhat unique .45 caliber pistol that “broke open” on top like a shotgun for ease of loading; it was favored by the cavalry and by some famous outlaws like Frank and Jesse James. He also gets to use a massive old 10 gauge shotgun. Joe the wolfer, who helps track the Vampire, uses a huge Sharps buffalo gun. Of course, the bullets — even a lot of bullets — don’t have much of lasting effect on Jericho Whistler, the Vampire terrorizing LonePine.

Niina : Can you tell us three things about Sheriff Hardiman that we didn't learn from the novella?

Clark : 1) His eye sight is getting bad as he gets older and that can be fatal for a gunfighter, or a sheriff. Luckily, the West is changing quickly and there aren’t as many young guns interested in making a reputation by besting him ... even if they could (he’s still really fast). 2) He’s only scared of one thing: being out of his element. Not that long ago he had to leave LonePine and travel to the east coast to try and win back the love of Miss Grace. The time he spent in New York was excruciating, but it worked out well. 3) There’s a 50 /50 chance he once hung an innocent man and that sometimes wakes him up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat.

Niina : What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

Clark : I’m not sure any of my quirks can be classified as “interesting,” but I still prefer writing by hand. I like using a pen on paper, preferably an oversized sketch pad with enough recycled content to make the surface a little rougher than regular paper. The problem with that quirk is that I’m a slow writer, but I’m a very fast typer. It would be much more effective to just use a computer and avoid the whole middle step of transcribing what I’ve written in long hand. I’m stubborn though, so maybe that’s the interesting quirk?

Niina : What is the biggest “no-no” when it comes to writing for you?

Clark : The thing I always guard against is capitulating to or embracing the concept of writer’s block. Deadline writing (I work in communications) has quickly dispelled the notion that the mood has to be right or the Muse has to be present or anything like that. I’ve found there are no good excuses for not writing, other than being so tired I’m incoherent — and even then there might be some nuggets. Maybe it’s more about learning to trust myself and never getting my own way. It doesn’t have to be magic every time — no matter what you write, you can improve on it or discard it later, but waiting for the perfect moment always means hundreds of almost perfect moments go unused. It also helps to write with a partner, because Kathleen is always able to help support and encourage quality writing time.

Niina : What book, if any, do you read over and over again?

Clark : Les Miserables by Victor Hugo is one of my favorites and easy to read again. I also love reading Cyrano De Bergerac, by Rostand. Yes, it’s a play, but that last scene always gets me right in the heart. I also always keep a copy of The Unquiet Grave by Cyril Connolly nearby.

Niina : If you could only read 5 horror books for the rest of your life what would they be?

Clark : The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins, for sure; in fact, I’d like all of his books in one. An H.P. Lovecraft compendium, but that might be too scary. The Collected Works of Edgar Allen Poe. Blindness, by Jose Saramago (though considered “literary fiction,” this was a truly terrifying novel), Cruelty: Human Evil and the Human Brain by Kathleen Taylor (nonfiction, which makes this even more horrifying). Can I have six? I’d like to add the collected works of Ambrose Bierce. The Difficulty of Crossing a Field still freaks me out a little.

Niina :  Now before were done here are some Quick fire questions:

Cats or dogs?  Normally, I’d say dogs, but my thinking changed after a chance to get to know Silver, the most awesome cat in the world.
Coffee or tea?  Coffee as the glue that holds my molecules together, tea as way to enhance the quality of the day.
Rocks or flowers?  Interesting. Rocks. Especially obsidian and sunstones, the state gemstone of Oregon.
Night or day?  Night.
Horror or Thriller? Horror. No, thriller. Wait. Both?
Brunettes or Blonds? Somewhere in between; exactly the same color as Kathleen’s hair is my favorite.
Vampires or werewolves? Vampires, for sure.
Cowboys or Bull riders? Cowboys; because it’s a state of mind. A bullrider can certainly be a cowboy, but some cowboys aren’t bullriders.
Pick-up or Mini-van? Pickups. Even better: a horse.
Women:  Talkative or wallflowers? A wallflower who has interesting things to say!
Beer or Wine? Beer; or better yet, whiskey.
Pizza or Restaurant? Pizza.
Cake or Donuts? Donuts; the breakfast of cowboys … or at least long-haul truckers, cowboys of the road.
TV or DVD? Books.
Movies: Romantic comedies or Action/Adventure? Action/Adventure with a little romance.
Halloween or Midsummer? Halloween, for so many reasons.
Times New Roman or Courier? Helvetica; I read somewhere that it’s the “perfume of the city” and I’ve been hooked ever since.
Pens or pencils?  Pens; specifically, the Pentel EnerGel; it will change your life.
